I have recently been called for (3) of these players locking up - no picture nor control.

They are all going directly to new Samsung TVs - UN55H7150 for example. They're all directly installed with 12' to 20' HDMI cables that I've had success with for years.

Anyone know about issues with this line?

Been using the 5200 most of the year after we cleaned out our stock of 5100s. I'm not aware of any lock-up issues. Then again, my guess is that 9 of 10 customers never turn them on since they get AppleTVs and/or Rokus.

I'm using them for Pandora and Netflix in all three cases.

I have many S5200 out in the field with not a single issue. Although I hate the new design since the S5100.
Many S5100 before that, no problems.
S590 before that.
S580 before that (even have one of those on my test bench still).
S570 before that (boys still have 1 of those in their room).
S560 before that.
etc...

I have used the Sony's because of the reliability and discrete codes over the years. Just worked on a previous customer that had (3) Sony BDP-S300 I had sold him a long time ago. Upgraded to the BDP-S5200. The S300's still worked - but OMG those things were so slow...

I know the Samsuck fan boys are going to be mad about this but!  Your common denominator besides the Sony S5200, are the Samsung TV's.
And YES, it is possible. Last year I had a customer's POS Sharp TV, kill 2 Yamaha receiver HDMI outputs before I figured out what was going on.

Are the units you have issues with also using the streaming services or just physical media? I've stopped using BDP's and TV's for streaming and only use Roku with an occasional client owned ATV.

Yes, They are using media streaming services. We have also stopped using the blurays as media streaming. however, some budget projects won't spend the 100 extra for a media streaming device. It is hard to explain to a customer that the bluray players we sell basically suck, When we can, we sell the yamaha aventage bluray with apple tv or roku.

And you haven't had any problems with Yamaha disc players? Hahahaha...
Honestly I haven't used them in many years. 100% failure rate on all the old stuff, scared me away.
Yamaha A/V receivers are great but disc players... not so much. The Aventage disc players are suppose to be so much better and built by them. But over the years (decades), Yamaha has "LIED" to us about that many times before, when introducing a new disc player. So I absolutely do not believe them now. "Boy that cries wolf" "Fool me once..." etc...

As far as the Sony bluray problems; this may fall under my 'voodoo theory' about electronics in certain places in the world. If you are indeed seeing that much failure with the Sony's, then it maybe that they will not work in your area. Test and use a different brand.

Just did a service call on a BDP-S5200 today.

Unit locked up and wouldn't respond to any commands. Only thing showing on the PDP was the "home" page, and it had a very orange color.

Pulled the power to reboot, and it although it kinda worked, there was no sound on Pandora, and it still had the orange color.

Pulled the power for about 10 minutes, went off to do something else, it finally powered up with the message "software update available", and the orange glow was gone.

Ran the update and I had no picture or control.

Pulled the power once again, and it came back, once again.

I'm hoping this POS will work for awhile (At least until the warranty period is over...lol).

Ran that, and then I had no video output once again.

I talked to someone here and he said they have had very little problem with Sony equipment and they're authorized to service it. I just bought an LG to try it for a project and it locked up in only a few days. This may be a problem of its own, or it may have been due to the U-Verse gateway having a problem with WiFi- both of my Roku have had problems maintaining connection with the network and most of the time, it wouldn't re-connect until I had tried several times. I had received a replacement gateway, but wanted to see if the problem would reappear, after doing all of the troubleshooting for ATT (I found that if the channel was set to Auto, it would connect, but not if one channel was chosen). That lasted for about 1-1/2 weeks. I installed the new gateway- it's not the big silver one, it's now the smaller black one and after looking, I see that this one does 802.11n, which the silver version didn't. Works great, so far.
My mechanic told me, "I couldn't repair your brakes, so I made your horn louder."
