Trying to figure out a way to set up a monitor for cameras in an adjoining building that currently has GCC-010J5 PE-89-AL 25/24 24 AWG cable running between them with some unused pairs. Wondering if 4 pairs could be used with an extender, either HDMI or VGA. Anyone ever tried it?

Composite or s-video.
One rg-59/6 would do so much for you. :-(

I'm sorry, but you need to be more careful. I nearly hurt myself falling off the chair after I saw HDMI and "25 pair phone cable." That's category 3IYL, meaning "3 if you're lucky."

While we don't expect that this would work, if you have a couple of spare BALUN's you could try your luck. Recently a fellow claimed success using crimps to splice a new end on to a damaged HDMI cable.
If the resources are available, I think that HDMI over IP would be a better strategy.

Call us on Monday at 800-615-0206 x408 and ask to borrow a Transmitter/Receiver pair to do the test. Pick 4 pairs, connect them to RJ45's using 568A or 568B wiring scheme, and plug them in. You'll have your answer in a few minutes.

No; lending equipment to see if unproven cabling will meet design expectations is great service.
If it leads to a sale, that's a bonus.

I am guessing JAP has not tested this in their lab. This is free R&D for them as well. :) Good gesture nonetheless. There are not a lot of manufacturers out there willing to lend products out for testing not knowing whether it will work or not.

Ed, does JAP have any sort of testing ability to see how border line the performance is? In other words, an ability to see how reliable, or how close to the cliff the signal strength/integrity is?

Ed, does JAP have any sort of testing ability to see how border line the performance is? In other words, an ability to see how reliable, or how close to the cliff the signal strength/integrity is? A high end network cable analyzer like a Fluke Networks tool would be able to answer that question. The bandwidth speed reported would tell us exactly whether or not it would work. After all, our HDMI over IP devices are simply network appliances. If the cable passes the test for sufficient network speed, we know it will work for our purposes.

There are not a lot of manufacturers out there willing to lend products out for testing not knowing whether it will work or not. We have now tested this in our lab and it worked. I turns out we had a 25 pair phone cable in the IT closet that was left over from a previous tenant. The other end was located in the back of our warehouse (about 75' long). We terminated 4 pairs at both ends with CATx ports, then used CAT5e patch cables to connect the Just Add Power 2G Transmitter and Receiver. For the test we used a Blu-Ray player running the Disney WOW disc. HDMI audio and video are running fine across the 25 pair phone cable.
