Whenever i get to a job i have to keep my mac book pro and iPad charged. It would be nice to have a single power cord with both connectors on it. See my crude concept graphic below.

It would have two "whips" that had magsafe on one end and lighting on the other so both devices can be powered simultaneously while sitting on a desk.

Anything like this? Something better?

I doubt that is out there. As the charger for the MBP is 18~19 volts and the iPad is 5volts.

Besides, why not keep the iPad plugged into the MBP for charging? Or in the truck between sites?

This could be handled inside the brick.

Because my iPad3 says "Not Charging" when connected to my MBP so i assumed the current model iPad won't charge either. Or has this changed?

"not charging" seems to be code for "trickle charging" I've seen that sometimes and my devices always charged up over night.

I think it just says that when its plugged into a low amp USB port.

Closest think I've seen to what you are looking for is a Universal laptop charger witha USB port in the power brick. Kinda slick.. Best buy Rocketfish I Think.. but PC only obviously.

Not exactly what your looking for, but might be your best option.

Now that would be awesome.

Mac, you are right that the 5 volt can be handled in the brick. I just hadn't gotten to that part yet in my mind. ha

As for why your iPad says "not charging". I could swear up and down that my g/f's iPad 4 (the first with lightning connector) can be hooked up to her 15" 2009 MBP. But it's been a while since I gave her them.

I guess it depends on the model of the MBP. If the USB is able to put out 2amps, then it should charge.

It could also be the cable. I gave her a 3 foot extension USB cord with the supplied 3 foot cord. The iPad didn't like that all to well, it said not charging. So I bought a 6 foot cable, [Link: ebay.com] and it charges the iPad with no problem.

I have a 15" retina MBP. It's the model before the most recent. I have half a dozen charging cables and all give me the same message. I have never left it connected over night so i didnt notice the trickle charge that Impact described.

This will work. I can get a long charging cable and use some tech flex to bundle the two power cords together.

There you go,

If you don't have a 6foot cable. Check out the link that I provided as I know that, that cable does work. That is if you have the iPad with lightning connection. If you don't, check out cables that have the "MFi" logo [Link: developer.apple.com] as they were approved by Apple as for power requirements and what not.
