I have a simple pair of audio Engine speakers at my desk right now. They are cool. They are NOT anything compared to any of the active monitors mentioned in the thread (Dynaudio or Genelec).

The Dynaudios that I linked to are are passive.

Thought you meant these. I love their regular speakers too.

Dynaudios are passive.

Not all of them. Check out the Xeo series. They are killer powered wireless speakers. Coming soon the New Focus XD series line up will surely be another word class powered offering.

Treated myself to the JBL LSR305's for my office system. Connected to my Mac Mini. Sound quality is astounding for the price.

Check them out...

I really didnt think about going active, if i did i would probably have to go XLR (because why not) anyone have a dac that has xlr out? JBL's look nice, really nice pricepoint too.

Now to answer stanely's question, which is what i probably should have done in the beginning.

Im looking to spend between 1400-1800 (retail) since i already have the amp and was paid for.

im honestly between the KEF r300's and the LS50's. I can find threads that are 100 pages long with heated debates about which ones are better. Would love to be able to demo them, but would hate to waste a local hifi's shop time and not purchase them from him.

I have a friend in the area that is letting me borrow his Golden Ear AON3's for a few weeks. Cant wait to try them out!

You could use KEF X300A' s which are active and have a built in USB asynchronous DAC. They sound pretty good.

If you have a quality amp then find a good DAC and use great passive speakers. I think you'll dig the GoldenEar speakers.

+1 on the JBL 305 or 308 if you want something larger. I haven't seen better for the price. They are not Genelec or Dynaudios if you are willing to go to that price level but for the money they are outstanding.
