I would be on my way to the ER... its that simple... especially since it was not gradual but immediate onset.

I have to strongly disagree with this. I'm not claiming they work miracles. I just said they're great at removing wax. The reason I say that is you can see the wax that's removed after you use the product.
The experiment reported on in "Bad Science" is a controlled experiment where two sets of candles were used. One set was used on a couple of ears and another set of candles were used on... something that could not possibly have ear wax. At the end of the test, both sets of candles looked as though they had ear wax on them. Not possible with the second set IF it was actually ear wax.
A bit of advice from the New Age heydays of the seventies is "don't keep your mind so open that your brains fall out."
Also, don't forget the placebo and the nocebo effects. New Age beliefs were incredibly accurate in stating that there are huge connections between mind and body, and if you believe in ear candles, their use might accompany a cure. It's just that a scientific experiment shows they can "remove earwax" that isn't there.

I get all that...especially the placebo effect, which is a very real thing. When I first tried the candles, it was with a group of people. I did it for the hell of it because I thought it was funny. It never entered my mind that it might help with my condition. It wasn't until a few days later when I realized the tinnitus in my ears was barely noticeable.
Before the candles, my tinnitus was always with me and quite prominent. It would get progressively worse and eventually evolve into a 6-8 hour vertigo spell. Those spells would render me completely useless. I couldn't stand, and when I wasn't vomiting, I was fighting back the urge to vomit. When the vertigo subsided, the tinnitus would still be there...and VERY loud. It would eventually settle back to a "normal" level and the whole process would repeat itself.
Like I said previously, I haven't had another episode since I started using the candles. Often times I can't even hear the ringing in my ears, which was unfathomable to me before. The ringing always comes back though and it eventually gets to a level of intensity that tells me another attack is coming. That's when I know it's time to use the candles. Now I tend to do it a little more frequently because I hate the tinnitus so damn bad and it calms it.
Is it my mind that's curing this and not the candles? I can't say for absolute certainty, but I could care less to be totally honest with you. Mr. Stanley stated the ever popular "you don't know what you got till it's gone" phrase, and that's even more true when it comes to your health. I was at my wits end for a long time. As any of you who have suffered from any kind of ailment can attest to...the only thing that really matters is getting rid of it!!!!
Could it be that is the melted wax from the candle that ahs dripped down the cone and cooled? I tried them once. Didnt do a thing. Warm water and a syringe was the only thing that finally helped open my ear up
The article i read had a video with it where they sent the "residue" to a lab after using 4 different brands of candles. No human "ear wax" was detected. In every case the residue was the wax from the candle and the soot from the catalyst.

Our store is in this hippy dippy part of town. Next door is a new-age shop... bunch of old lesbians running around in their purple clothes, selling crystals, oils, psychedelic posters... Sold me some ear candles... I burned two of them... no workee, and my smoke detector went off bringing my panicked landlord to the door...

i have a bad case of tinnitus. To me it sounds like crickets chirping. The worse thing it is never peaceful and quiet because I always here this constant ringing/chirpiing my ears.
I imagine that this came about from 35 years of using a hammer drill and not using ear plugs.
Sometimes I lay in bed and it is hard to go to sleep because of the constant ringing in my ears.

Thank you for knowing what I didn't have the time to look up in "Bad Science."

I think I'll put this into the thread about impact drivers.

After 3 months of basically being totally deaf in my right ear (except for loud ringing and pressure on the eardrum - no pain really)... I woke up the other morning, and the ringing was gone along with the pressure & my hearing is back 100%!
I was afraid I'd damaged my hearing via late night / tequila / earbuds + rock n roll at too high of volume levels.
Its like I won the lottery. Apparently it was a viral inner-ear infection that meds could not help.
You don't appreciate what you have until you lose it sometime, but to get my hearing back is a true blessing -- Especially being a HI Fi salesguy!
Thanks, Allah whoever you may be!
Just to be on the safe side I think I'll cool it with the earbud volume levels to be on the safe side...

This might be a great time to have it checked with an otoscope and get them flushed.
Yep. good idea! Pretty embarrassing to be selling Hi Fi with a bum ear!!
Was out on a date the other evening (before my ear improved) was in a crowded noisey restaurant, with a new friend, and I couldn't understand a word she was saying... I just kept smiling and nodding my head yes... No telling what she was saying)!

Hope you didn't agree to be a pirate
Glad your feeling better, did it drain? thats the weirdest thing to wake up to. Could it have been dirty earbuds? A scratch in your ear and some nasty bacteria filled ear buds?

Good, just as long as you don't start repeating yourself repeating yourself!

No it was an inner ear infection on the other side of the eardrum. Dr. told me a few weeks ago sometimes this clears us after a couple of months or sometimes it can permanently damage your hearing! Holy crap! Well I guess I was one of the luckier ones. Sorry for you guys with the constant ringing. That sucks
