Speaking of ears...Last week i woke up experiencing vertigo which caused a panic attack because i thought i was having a heart attack or something worse. The two of them scared me enough to call an ambulance. ER Doc tells me he has no idea what caused the episode because all of their tests point to me being okay. I have been at a job out of town since Sunday and i am still experiencing vertigo. It's not as bad as it was the first time around...mostly because i know what it i and it doesn't freak me out.

I think i have the cause narrowed down to BPPV (Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo). Turns out that there are tiny crystals in your ear that can get dislodged. When they do...your navigation system is worthless and your whole world spins violently around.

It could have been caused by the 10/12/15/18" woofers and 1000W amps ive had in my car as a teenager/20 something. It could be from 10 years of organized football (Pop Warner & High School). Could be because instead of pain killers i pound the side of my head to get rid of head aches. Whatever the cause...it sucks.

I'm a bppv survivor.... People thought I was having a stroke when it first happened. Thankfully a friend of mine is a head and neck surgeon who is in practice with an Otomeurologist who specializes in treating balance disorders. He saw me the day I blacked out. He had me back to 75% in a few days. 100% within a week. When it came back a few weeks later (worse than before) he had me fixed in one treatment. My advise is to find an otoneurologist and fix the bppv, very miserable thing to have. I can call my guy to see if he knows someone in your area if you need it.

Wait a minute, you're in Chicago..... Go see Tim Hain or his partners at Northwestern. He's one of the best in the country!

Bruce,

Get some baby oil, put a couple drops in your ear, stand under a HOT shower (ear up) for a few.

A lot of SH** will come out.

Some of it may be brain matter, but don't let that bother you... -)

Actually this does work.

I have BPPV too. Comes on strong a couple times a year, strong enough that I have to go in for Epley every so often. That is a wild ride but works to dislodge the crystals.

On the other hand (and back to the OP), I also have had three bouts with SSHL (sudden sensorineural hearing loss) and this is an extremely severe medical emergency. Mr. Stanley better hope that isn't what he has. No actual known cause, no known cure other than lots and lots of Prednisone and hope that it goes away. Just finished a four week regime of Prednisone last week and thankfully I can now hear from my left ear again. (Not to mention I no longer have shakes thanks to the drugs). Scary shit, especially in our line of work.

I have an inner ear issue that I won't bore you with the details. I use these every few months and they do wonders for removing wax:

http://www.beeswaxearcandles.com/

I usually get them at Sprouts, which is a local organic store here in Denver. You might try one in your area...or Amazon.

You really need to buy "Bad Science." And read it. Maybe read it again a year later.

Imagine a book that tells how big Pharma is misinforming us, then turns the other way and tells how homeopathy cannot possibly work... then comments on the simple way that ear candles simply cannot be doing anything. With dozens of other issues in between.

He informs about unfair use of statistics, negative outcomes that get left in desk drawers... it's a great book because it can help us understand the manipulations going on around us all the time.
A good answer is easier with a clear question giving the make and model of everything.

All sound like good suggestions, except a WaterPik is dangerously strong.

The waterpik was suggested by my Dr... Yes M.D.

As Bruce holds the phone to his bad ear, it'll be one of those: "Can you hear me now?" things.

And the good doctor hangs up... :-)

Everything i have read about these points to snake oil.

I have to strongly disagree with this. I'm not claiming they work miracles. I just said they're great at removing wax. The reason I say that is you can see the wax that's removed after you use the product.

Also...FWIW, the "condition" I suffer from, which I mentioned earlier, is tinnitus...accompanied by serious and frequent bouts of vertigo. My symptoms mirror many of the aspects of Ménière's Disease, but are different enough to where the doctors don't think that's quite what I have. Anyway, I've been using the wax candles on my ears for the past couple of years now and haven't had a single case of vertigo since I started. At the time I started using them, I was experiencing vertigo every 2-3 weeks and the spells would last 6-8 hours. It was miserable.

I'm not claiming they'll work the same for you because I think we're talking about two different animals. I'm also not even claiming they cure vertigo. I think there's just something about wax build up that was triggering mine, and since the candles clean out the ears, it's helpful in "my" case of vertigo.

Did it just crop up? Could be an inner ear infection (sometimes those have few other symptoms). If it's not earwax and nothing improves after a week, they'll probably give you some antibiotics.

The last time I had a stubborn hearing issue that just wouldn't go away for like two weeks, I went through the whole wondering if it was earwax thing... went to the doc, said they're perfectly clean, gave me a course of antibiotics and it cleared up in a few days.

Thanks yall.

I've tried the ear candles, paper clip, peroxide, warm water, ear syringe, eardrops --- I think it might be an infection.

You dont appreciate what you have until you lose it right?

Guess its off to the Walk-In clinic. Maybe I ll see a cute nurse...

Could it be that is the melted wax from the candle that ahs dripped down the cone and cooled? I tried them once. Didnt do a thing. Warm water and a syringe was the only thing that finally helped open my ear up

Oh come on, you outta know how women are. They want you to listen to them... In your present condition, it'll be very hard for you.

But there again, that's a perfect excuse for you and she should have understanding.

Ugh, my brain is hurting over this thought.
