Has anyone else noticed this? I had a service call the other day for a customer who's BD-S673 was locking up on Netflix. Every time you launch Netflix on the unit, its fine up until the point where it is suppose to actually load the movie selection. Sign in works fine, and it will get to the screen where you choose if you want the regular Netflix or the Netflix for kids, but as soon as you make your selection for on that screen, the player locks up and require a reset.

Today I tried my BD-A1020 at home. It did the same thing. With the exception that my Netflix is setup with different users, so instead of the "Netflix or Netflix Kids" screen, I have the user selection screen. But once again, as soon as I make a selection, the player locks up.

I am wondering if this has anything to do with Netflix no longer being included in the new players.

Both units are on the latest firmware. I have tried both static and DHCP. All other network functions work fine.

Looking at this logically, you don't have enough information to conclude that it has anything to do with Yamaha. If you found these conditions to be true and you only tried this on a Tuesday, you'd have just as much logical ammo to conclude that the problem was Tuesdays.

If either, or both locations worked fine with another brand of player but not Yamaha, then Yamaha could be the common issue. If the download speed has been verified to be fast enough, then that could be ruled out.

The one client of mine who loves Netflix had to have the download resolution lowered because, though it downloaded perfectly three months ago, it started to falter, reload, then finally would not play anything. After lowering the res, he has had zero problems. Though it took talking to Verizon, then Netflix, and the gal we had at Netflix seemed, in retrospect, to know instantly that downrezzing would solve the problem but she didn't even want to bring it up.
A good answer is easier with a clear question giving the make and model of everything.

Fair enough Ernie. I'll throw in that my Roku3 works fine on Netflix. It is definitely just the BluRay player(s). It may not be every Yamaha though, that is why I am asking if others are seeing this. It seems like a recent problem, since I just noticed it and have not started to receive other complaints yet.

Keep in mind both players lock up every time on the same screen (as soon as the movie selection should pop up).

Hmmm, "lock up." With my clients, everything looked good, sometimes a download wold stop, then nothing. The players were not locked up, though, as you could easily back them away from the program you were trying to download, and they would just as easily get stuck in the same place on any other program. Do the Yamahas let you navigate away from the "locked up" situation, or do you have to unplug them? Or chant something?

I have two PS3's a Wii and an XBOX 360 all of which never have any issues with Netflix. However I also have a Sony media player, and three different models of Samsung Bluray players (on the same network) and those all freeze when they are not otherwise just being sluggish, does not mater what I do to them, static addresses, firm ware update, power cycle, the song is always the same with those dogs.

My conclusion is that some gear just plain sucks for any number of reasons. Find something that works and stick with it, and pray they dont discontinue it any time soon.

The down rez is an interesting suggestion, perhaps the provider is pushing their gear to hard, tossing to many network errors your way, which some devices simply cant deal with?

We raised the download rate on the customer's DSL a few months ago when NetFlix was not always working. It then worked GREAT, then a month ago started messing up again, up to the point where nothing played.

The downres was done by the Netflix lady, rather than her telling us how to do it, probably because we had been on the phone with her for at least a half hour, going over everything we could do to reset, restart, reboot, and curse. See, you can sign into your account online and change the resolution setting yourself.

RTI Installer, Never Ignore The Obvious: log on and lower the download resolution and see if all that equipment then works. Maybe the problem is download speed!

And, by the way, I think NetFlix increased the required download speed over the last few months, though the lady denied it. However, system behavior fully agrees with constant download speed but raising required speed.

Yes locked up means locked up. The unit has to be reset before it will respond to any commands. This is a new occurrence. Both units worked fine with netflix before this started happening.

Now confirmed in 3 different locations (customers, home, showroom). 2 of these were BD-S673's and 1 was a BD-A1020.

Have you bothered to contact Yamaha, since it's their product that you're asking about? (and I don't want to see anything about ending a question with a preposition, either)

How many devices were streaming Netflix at one time? They allow two. I know it's an odd question, in light of the fact that the players actually locked up, but....

Can you do a firmware update on these players?

I have a Denon with a similar issue. It all started when the release the profiles for different users. I have more troubleshooting to do before I can confirm a pattern.

Hey Brad,

I think this might be unrelated to user profiles. They were working fine on the yamaha's before. Also the first customer with this problem did not have profiles set up.
