Have you tried another receiver just to be sure?

Sounds like they are combination speakers with built in powered subs. Upper binding posts are for input to the speakers and lower inputs are for powered sub section. I bet you are getting a ground loop or such from a speaker wire that is shorted to electrical ground. Try a new wire strung from the receiver to the speaker and take a meter to the existing wire and measure to electrical ground.

You know, I've wondered a few times if this thread is a troll (did I use the term correctly?). It's a weird problem, it's not really well described, and four pages of responses end up asking if we ever found out what the speakers are.

I think the original poster needs to come clean: Either tell us you're just funning us, or tell us ALL the details clearly and once, with all models and brands and clear descriptions of what's connected to what and what the tests show..
A good answer is easier with a clear question giving the make and model of everything.

Sorry it's taken so long to get back to this thread. I finally had a chance to get to his house last night and actually see/hear the issue in person.

He has a Pioneer Elite receiver connected to a 5-speaker system (no separate subwoofer). The two front main speakers are powered Polk Audio speakers. I didn't see a model number on them, but they have four speaker level inputs on each so that they can be biamped. The lower set of speaker connections is for the subwoofers. They also have line-level inputs (stereo?!) for an internally powered subwoofer.

Thanks,
CJ

That was a pretty good clue I think.

Don't think a trolling is going on here.

What was the outcome CJ

This thread has shown reading comprehension, without the comprehension. I include myself, too.

But again, the problem stayed on the left side when the speakers were swapped.

Something on that side of the room is emitting evil energy.

Or an X-Ray machine?

Or, that. Maybe they live near water and have a wheel-driven dynamo for their power generation and that's what's behind the wall next to the speaker.
