Client doesn't want to see a sound bar. Bose box speakers are nicely hid, but the amp has failed.
Could I set the amp to auto sense an audio input and give TV sound whenever they turn the TV on?

Yes, so long as you do not watch and listen at the same time Lip sync issues ruin this setup
I wish Playbar had a component only option. (like the connect, no speakers, no amp, only input and preamp processing)then you could add amp and speakers of choice

Yes Sonos will automatically switch to the line-in if you want it to.
In my experience the lip sync isn't that bad. But the larger issue is trying to control volume. If the TV has variable audio out (pretty rare these days) then you can make it work. But otherwise the volume would need to be controlled on the Sonos app, which is not very convenient.
You can however do the Snap mini amp and a Sonos CONNECT. That way you have IR controlled volume and Sonos with the same set of speakers.

I'm told (though have not yet tried) that lip sync delay with Connect:Amp is acceptable as long as you configure the line-in encode settings to be uncompressed/low latency. Is this not true in others' experience...?

Does the TV have analog out? Or only digital? If it has analog, I'd use whatever amp and a Sonance AL2 with the TV on the sensing input. I know some manufacturers have this type of auto sense switching built into amps as well, but I can't think of a model off the top of my head. Are you abandoning the bose sub? Or is it a passive crossover 2.1 system?

Active sub, amp for sats built into sub, little IR box sits under TV. I won't get to the house to check it until Monday or Tuesday.

Here is a crazy idea. Replace the Bose with more Bose. How does that sales lesson go, if the customer wants chocolate ice cream, then sell them chocolate ice cream dammit. I remember Mr Stanley bringing that up years ago.
