There are some off the shelf solutions, but they are pretty pricey. I can't help but think with my sources I should be able to do something for less, and probably better. I'm not really interested in having radio, because I would rather my iPhone be my source.

This is the type of ATV. Mounting points shouldn't be a problem if I can find the right equipment.

edit: I changed the subject line because I realized the original was inaccurate for what I really am trying to find out

Assuming 12volt battery with enough current. Pair of marine spkrs + Bluetooth receiver + mobile amp.

Or cheap head unit with Bluetooth capability + speakers.

The Bluetooth allows you to keep the phone in your pocket. That way it'll only get wet instead of drenched.

Bluetooth headphones?

I know nothing about marine grade equipment. Does anyone have any recommendations?

In would use a marine kenwood head unit and insert that into a plastic enclosure.
Ed will be known as the Tiger Woods of the integration business, followed closely with the renaming of his company to "Hotties A/V". The tag line will be "We like big racks and tight holes"...

Ha ha ha I was going to suggest the same thing. Sennheiser noise cancelling ones....

I installed a couple of JVC marine head units with BT, but I'd want to know how stiff the suspension is before recommending anything. Also, the charging system will have everything to do with how successful this is- if you use an amp that can suck up all of the current, the alternator will die, usually when you need it most.

How loud do you want it? If a head unit will do the job, you should be OK, but even they can draw 15A-20A peaks.

Show the dash area and any storage bins that you could use- a marine head unit housing will be needed, as well as a rear support to keep it from wiggling.

Go to a West Marine store- they have several models on display. The one I went to doesn't know how to make sure the speakers are polarized correctly, but that was a couple of years ago, so they may have fixed it. Then, look at Crutchfield for prices.

I don't want to add extra amps or build some killer system like you would put in a car. I want something that's a cleaner finish than a boombox strapped to the roll bar. Most of the off the shelf solutions have a weather proof box that mounts to the roof, so ed, I probably would need some kind of enclosure.

I'll take some more pictures of the dash and interior.

Ok, let's see if these help any.

There isn't any room in the dash. There is a space that is made to accept a switch control panel, and I've seen some guys cut out the warning sign and bolt in a custom switch panel for controlling accessories. But neither locations have the depth for a head unit.

I did consider mounting something under the dash (like a 1970's CB radio install) but it's all pretty flimsy. Nothing strong enough to fasten to. So the only location I see to put anything is up top either mounted to the roll bar or the roof.

This is the section above the seats. Probably the best spot for speakers if I can find some type of enclosure to mount the speakers in.

There are products like this, but I would rather something a little nicer (looks and probably sound). I just can't see paying $270 for these

Are you looking for something to listen to while driving it or more for campsite entertainment?

As loud as those things are, perhaps a race radio type setup. You can comfortably talk to your co-dog and/or jack in Ipod or sat radio for tunes.
Something like these.

The $279 price really isn't terrible- ever see the prices they get for wakeboard boat speaker cans? Looks like a decent enclosure, too. You might contact the seller (Kolpin) and find out if you can buy the boxes separately.

Or, there's this-

I found a lot by googling 'Jeep CJ sound bar'.

Hmmm, I wonder if I could make that fit. I will have to measure and see. I believe the total width is wider than a CJ

I've been riding in dirt for a long time.
In every bike, ATV and 4x4 I've owned I used a headphones connected to WalkMan, MP3, Smartphone.

These toys can get loud and in order to enjoy music you'll have to crank the volume somewhat high.

It might be OK to blast music on the dunes, or on your private ranch, but if you're hunting, riding trails in the a park, or even driving thru campground with your choice of what passes for great music that's playing loudly, that's a good way to get shot at. :-)
