I just ran a couple miles of cable - 6 cat's to 7 TV locations. I will be trimming out to a rack housing cable boxes, Sonos, etc. Usual stuff.

I would like to see pics of your finished products and how you manage the weight and distribution of all the cable.

Thinking 6 Cat's to each location. Complete overkill but what the f*&k.

No doubt. I totally agree. I'm in one of those "my installer up north says" ... scenarios. Making the best of it.

What are you guys doing with your unused CATs? I guess that's the part I'm trying to tie up so that the rack doesn't look ridiculous.

Try running fewer cables.

I've been installing a generic "holding can" and run/loop extra wiring into it.

Why run 7x CAT6 to each location? Future proofing? Have you heard of conduit?

Conduit would be a great thing to add when possible, it is not always a possible option.

I am not sure what the big deal about 6 Catx's are though. When was the last time we were in a situation where you had a few too many wires to a location.

As opposed to not enough wires.
When good enough is not good enough.

I want to see pictures of the back of a rack where Audio and video baluns, converters, splitters,IR,serial, trigger, sense, network, etc in a rack because dealing with that stuff makes it next to impossible to look sexy. The only photos that I see people posting show one type of cable or are showing a wiring job that isn't finished.

That's only 42 CAT6 cables, and while it may be overkill or 7 TVs, it's really not that much cabling.  I know that once you add speaker & coax it starts to add up even more, but should be easily doable.

In typical Ernie fashion... give us more information.  What kind of rack?  Pull out or slide out from cabinet, wall mount, fixed floor mount, floor standing on casters, full height 44+ RU or something shorter???

I posted some photos here or at IP recently showing how I brought cables into a floor standing rack on casters recently... the photos are below.  I don't remember the cable counts for this job, but it was around 24 speakers, 36+ category cables, 8 cameras and some other misc. control and Coax.

Here's another photo showing cable trunks coming into the back of a rolling rack:

The rack I just posted is very busy and has all the things you mention and more.  From memory:
  • 24 port Ethernet switch & patch
  • Router with additional 8 port Ethernet
  • 8ch surveillance DVR and camera power supply
  • 9 zone Sonos
  • Cable Box and two DTV Genie Clients
  • Remote control processor
  • 2 x AVR
  • 2 x HDBT Extenders
  • APC UPS, APC H15 & APC G5 power conditioners
  • Sub amp
  • 2 x 12ch amps
  • 2 x Niles speaker switches
I'll get some close up photos of the back the next time I'm there.
