Is it necessary to use a gigabit switch with 4 IP cameras and an NVR?

Most 1080p IP cameras run at about what, 8mbit? Well, mine do anyways. So 8 x 4 = 32mbit... still plenty of headroom on a 100mbit link.

Yes, but recommended why? Just so you don't run into bottlenecks with future expansion?

Of course gigabit is ALWAYS recommended, but you did say "necessary", and I highly doubt it's "necessary" as in "won't work without". I mean the Snap A/V 1080p models only have 100mbit network interfaces anyways (and do confirm they stream at 8mbit) - so gigabit can't possibly be "necessary" with just four cameras, even if each is streaming to two devices.

BTW, if your issue is with a PoE switch (since so many lower-end models are only 100mbit), since you do only have four cameras to deal with, I can say the Zyxel GS1100-8HP has worked very well for me - cheap, unmanaged, fanless, 8 gigabit ports, 4 with PoE Plus (30 watts per port), has never once required any kind of manual intervention.
