Does this mean that Neil Young doesn't have $800,000 to put in a product that he believes in? Seems like a small amount for someone of his celebrity status.

Why would he shell the dough out if other people are more than willing? Now he can afford a pretty nice F40. :)

I'd be willing to bet that Neil Young has already put down a fair chunk of change to get the project this far and the Kickstarter piece is just bringing it from a working concept model to production.

Product introduction/launch doesn't come cheap.

Ernie,

Theres tons of Pono available online for free, at least that's what my friends tell me! :)

I understand it's just like the real stuff, too: a great place to pick up viruses. How realistic!
A good answer is easier with a clear question giving the make and model of everything.

I looked all over for this pono thing, and all I saw was a bunch of naked women doing some truly interesting stuff.

Now my computer is acting sort of strange.... ;-)

I just plunked down my pledge for $300. All my music is stored as FLAC files so I should be able to play it without issue. My current music system is Slimserver/players aka LMS. This should be an interesting addition. If I end up not using it there are always the grand kids

Damn! That is not only a nice F40, now he can add a pristine 375GTB4 to the shopping list, or if he searches hard enough, maybe a 250GTSWB. Sawweeeeet!!!!

...a DVD Audio player and only purchased a couple of discs. One of them happened to be a Neil Young album.

Neil Young should be more worried than most singers about high fidelity rendition of his voice.

Hey now. There are plenty of artists that do not have very....how do I say....traditionally trained...voices. LOOOOOOTS!! No shame in that. Good music is not always about technical perfection. :)

The backing looks to be there. Hopefully the selection lives up to the hype. I am not a big Neil Young listener...the first time I ever heard him and learned who he was, he was playing "Heart of Gold" on Saturday Night Live in the early 90s. Great performance. I cannot name any of his other songs though. :)

I pledged because I believe in the vision they are trying to spread. The player will be a fun toy and tool even. I am more interested in the store and being able to purchase from a large selection of high res. music. The problem with DVD-A and SACD was the selection was crap. The improvement in sound was there, but if you cannot get your favorite tunes, how good is it really?

Well that was interesting. I was deciding which PONO player to order and none of the signature models stood out to me. I thought about the Foo Fighters one, but in the end deciding the plain black model would do....but was wishing inside that there were a Metallica signature edition. Oh well...it was not to be and I saved myself $100.

Fast forward to the next morning, and I get an email stating they added a Metallica model! WTF? So of course I edited my order and signed up for that one and did not think twice about the extra $$.

Coincidental awesomeness!

Likely a very good product... but really, a questionable use of Kickstarter. Basically it's nothing more than a standard preorder - there's every reason to believe the product would see the light of day without KS; there's no significant "development" your money is backing; no stretch goals to make the product even better now that they're so fantastically over-goal (normally, going 3 million dollars over goal with 29 days to go would warrant SOMETHING). But they've added more limited edition models. :-)

Oh well - interesting to see if it goes anywhere AFTER KS!

The hardcore audiophile crowd have had 24/96 and 24/192 since the days of DVD-Audio and SACD.

Much like any decent film-based movie can be transferred into higher resolution digital video formats as they arise, any good analog masters can be made into excellent sounding higher resolution digital files for players like this.

The news here is that Neil Young is pushing for this to be a more common consumer standard.
