Any opinions on the Sony KDL-70R550A vs the Sharp LC-70LE857U?

I think the Sony has a 120Hz refresh rate but uses "Motionflow XR 240" to simulate 240Hz. The Sharp is 240Hz.

Anyone use both and can compare? Customer recessed wall to fit the Sharp and the Sony has almost identical dimensions. Don't care about any features, just picture quality. Thanks for any help.

I don't care how many Hz Sharp claims to have, they all look horrible in my opinion.

personally, I think the Sharp looks better. Something just doesn't look right with the color on the Sony. It's not bad when by itself, but next to other TV's it doesn't look right. Tried to make it look it, but it just has some weird color thing going on. The Sharp is not as bad as everyone makes it out to be.

Put down the crack pipe and just step away.

The Sony's color is a bit off. There are no user controls for grayscale and color decoder, so you have to jump into the service menu to touch it up.
But the Sony even out of the box, using the 'custom' preset, it looks better than the Sharp POS!

my 2 cents,

first off, never been much of a SONY fan (other then their XBR's) as their Flat Panels are all rebadges of others (generally Samsung or Sharp depending on the version or year, their entry level sku's are generic junk).

I believe the Sony uses Sharps 6/7 series LCD panel.

In comparing the Sharps to others, I'd been a big proponent of them over most other LED manufacturers for the past few years...matte screen finish and a pretty great picture (on their 8 series), last years 8 series 844/847 left much to be desired though, this year's 857 is phenomenal, blows the Samsung F8000 out of the water for picture quality, motion and color rendering (quatron be damned).

I'd recommend going with the Sharp IF the 2 tone bezel is ok. Silver top/bottom; black on the sides, you've been warned. It looks and feels nice, but can also be a bit awkward/out of place depending on the installation location.

I don't like Sony.  I don't know how much it costs, I've never seen it, or it's specs.

But I've seen the Sharp.

I pick Sony.

Thanks for the insight. I just got to see them both playing the same source - Sony wins.

I haven't liked the picture on a Sony TV since they made their last CRT. I don't think they've ever made a good flat panel. But the big sharps show the pixels too much.

I hope you are not including the XBR in this statement.

In my opinion Sony is garbage but Sony XBR is amazing.

Also, I'm going to agree with Eastside. Some of the new Sharp models are impressive.

IMO, most every TV on the market looks crappy until you at least put a basic calibration on it. You really need to turn off the over scan feature that is active to get rid of that "mosquito noise" all over the edges of the images. The setting you want in the Sharps is called "dot-by-dot."

The R550A displays are mid tier, better than Costco but well short of an XBR.

But we're quibbling over a difference 95% of us won't be able to make out.

That's like saying your picking the better of two females. Doesn't tell me much.

Better to say you picked the red head over the blonde, at least I can identify which one you went with.

Sony still has better video processing than Sharp and even Samsung. They have for years. If I had to choose, it's going to be Sony.
