Woke up and found 2 emails from Bank Of America for a Debit Card/Checking Account. Logged in and found dozens of charges for ea.com and petco. Also found a $1.71 charge for something called AARON HOUSE UPPER JAY NY. Who goes out with a stolen credit card and charges something for $1.71?

I have made a point not to use my debit cards over the last few months but yesterday i left my wallet at home and only had my backup BOA card that i keep in my backpack. I used it at 7-11 and at a small deli. Today i have fraudulent charges. So now im wondering if one of these places is responsible for this or if my card information was obtained by someone else. I haven't used this card in months personally but i do have it listed for several accounts online. I wonder if thats enough to be vulnerable or if they are just pulling it from a database that was compromised? Anyone know?

Although it could be something as simple as an unsavory deli employee, the types of charges you describe leads me to believe that it's more likely a database of some sort that was compromised. Here's a link to an article that contains some useful information.

The debit machines or card readers are compromised. Happened to my folks when they went to Atlanta to the PGA Tour Championship event. My dad bought some merchandise at the shop and they stole his card number.

You figure Visa would be all over this type of fraud. It's becoming more prevelant everywhere now.

The little $1.71 charge is a typical "test" charge to see if the card is still able to be used.

You'll never know if it was an employee, or a card scanner.

I had my CC number stolen by a Home Depot employee (it was SOOO obvious), yet the CC company security guy, even though he told me they had caught the person, wouldn't fill me in with the details...

Guy charged some 9k against my card one night just minutes prior to the store closing, then proceeded to get a refund issued to a different CC (his) the next night just minutes AFTER store closing.

Would have been a good one for "Stupid Criminals"....

I think we need more information. Would you please give us the number, the name as it appears on the card, the three-digit number on the back, and the billing address... so we can look into it ourselves?

Thanks.
A good answer is easier with a clear question giving the make and model of everything.

Had it happen to me, they run the card through a manual card machine, stamping your card, then using it later.

This is funny because the first thing i did was dial the number in the alert email.

BOA Employee: Please give me the card number and expiration date.

Me: No. Use the last 4 of my social or a security question.

BOA Employee: We need the card number to prove you are who you say you are.

Me: I just called you from a number in an email. Use my security question to prove you are who you say you are.

BOA Employee: May i have permission to use a 3rd party service to verify your identity?

Me: I am calling in response to reported fraud. What possible benefit would there be for someone to pretend to be me to deny fraudulent charges on my credit card?

BOA Employee: I need to verify your...

Me: Hung up.

Logged in to my account and called in from the number on the website.

They were moved to Libya, so we blew it up. But they had already been moved to somewhere else that we'll blow up.

Had it happen to me too.

Day before Christmas about 5 years ago.  $1530.00  to OmanAir.

Took 4 days and Visa had the money back in my account.
