I have clients who do not know the transport control symbols they have been using for centuries. The control4 remote has no text. I cannot believe I still have to tell people that the sideways = = pause! Universal symbols are only universal for those who know them.

Same designers who put braille on all the signs probably. WTF? By the way, no braille on the emergency exit doors. So blind people can know where the bathroom is....if they can feel their way to the sign, but if there is a fire, f 'em.

Whine, Whine, Whine...
When you pay the price Google, Yahoo, Hotmail, etc... asks for email, you are at the mercy of whatever their whim is that week... and it seems they all like to change their interface regularly.
Pay for an exchange server account if you want mail, calendar, contacts pushed to you. If you're willing to make your phone/computer check every 30 minutes, you only need to buy a domain name, and use the smtp/pop that is provided when you host somewhere. You can then choose a client you like, and you're in control.

A while back I found myself in an argument with a web designer that was redesigning a community forum site using unique icons with no labels. He defended his design with some article he quoted about how icons are becoming more popular and what people recognize. This was based on some weird survey over things like how people recognize the shape of a stop sign and other well established items. I tried to explain that's because everyone knows what a stop sign is. But everyone doesn't know what a custom icon is, and the older someone is over 35 the more confused they become by new things online. Your stance is well supported by the humor and information at www.websitesthatsuck.com, where they have been calling crap like those icons "mystery meat navigation" for more than ten years. It's called mystery meat because, as with school cafeteria foods like "porcupine balls," you cannot tell what it is when you look at it, and you still might not know what it is after you take a bite, which in the case of a website would be mousing over it or even selecting it. I was just talking with a client about this yesterday and we invented a possible example: An icon could be something that looks like the outline of San Francisco Harbor... then when you mouse over it the word "Harbors" appears... then when you click over it you find that some idiot thought it would be cute to call their STORE LOCATIONS harbors, because that's where people have to go to get the goods. Worse yet, next time you want to find their locations, you have to remember what the hell that icon meant. And when many sites make their own custom icons, using the sites gets as hard as remembering passwords. Meanwhile, the website has done the worst thing a commercial site can do: put stumbling blocks in between them and me, making it difficult for me to throw my money at them. The goal of the site is supposedly to help me send them my money, but they make it a pain in the ass to do so.

I pay for 2 Google Apps for Business accounts. 1 for me 1 for my girlfriends. It's $60 a year. How much should i pay so that they keep their interface the way it is or make it better? Pay for an exchange server account if you want mail, calendar, contacts pushed to you. If they get accidentally deleted who cares? Out of 18,000+ messages i probably only need to save 4 of them.

Sorry you fell prey to Google's Apps for Business. You get the same... continually in Beta... webmail they give to everyone else for free. I hate mail clients. I don't need to store my emails. You're welcome to store everything in the cloud. The Google's, Hotmail, Yahoo, like it when you do, so they get the right to mine your data. The lack of control over your data and interface is what you give up. You've made your choice, and your choice just doesn't give you any control over the interface. Your complaints will probably just serve to raise your blood pressure a bit. That's the choice... Either you give someone else control, or you take control.

I've had a Yahoo account for my personal email for close to 10 years now. Over that period, they've probably made a dozen or so changes, none of which I really batted an eye over....until now.
They just completely revamped their email and I find it almost unusable. In fact, when I'm in front of a computer and need to do something in Yahoo, I pull out my phone because it's so much easier. I can't think of a single thing I like about it.
I'm totally amazed that THIS is the way a team of professional developers chose to show major upgrades in aesthetics and usability. They claim there are a ton of new features, but I have no idea what they are or how to access them because I think it's the most unintuitive interface I've ever used. Perhaps what's even more amazing is, there were people at Yahoo who tested this interface and said "Hey, this is awesome!" WTF?
I think there's too much upgrading for the sake of upgrading...

Your commenting about my comments about a product only serve to feed your incessant need to troll everything i post. That's the choice... Either you give someone else control, or you take control. I just don't find the Google Apps for Business offerings that attractive. I think everything they offer, Microsoft 365 does a better job of. Your commenting about my comments about a product only serve to feed your incessant need to troll everything i post. LOL. If I was busy paying that much attention to your posts, I wouldn't get any work done! Honestly, I don't know how you do get any work done, you post so much. I chose to live in 2013 rather than 1999 with a mail client. If by living in 2013 you mean allowing all your email to be mined... you are welcome to it. You don't have to download mail from the cloud with something like Microsoft 365... sounds like you just don't really understand the issues. They even have a webmail front end, and apps for iOS, Android, and of course Windows. No need to store your mail locally if you don't want to, but you can. Of course, Microsoft 365 isn't allowed to mine my data. So, I'll pay the fees.

Honestly, I don't know how you do get any work done, you post so much. Smarter people work much faster. If by living in 2013 you mean allowing all your email to be mined... you are welcome to it. I am a sissy boy who likes butter on his crumpets. I agree with what you are saying but i'm not sure why you would admit this on a public forum.
