Laptop with 3.5 analog out, no Hdmi. If playing movie from iTunes or DVD drive will this output 5.1 to receiver?

Remember, there is no such thing As a dumb question!

Thanks in advance
why have a nice system if you cant operate it, program the remote the right way the FIRST time!

Model # would help. If it were an Apple laptop, there would almost certainly be a mini-Toslink at the end of the 3.5mm jack and you could output 5.1.

I thought 3.5mm analog was limited to stereo only.
Isn't optical or digital coax jack required for 5.1?

Unless of cause you have some weird 3.5mm configuration unlike what Sammy TVs use for components out of 3.5mm jack.

Lots of laptops use a combo jack that does analog audio on a minijack or toslink with a special cable or adapter.

3.5 will only output analog in stereo. Even if you insert a DAC, you will only see stereo.

Yes, laptop is set to output 5.1, but there is no digital out. Only audio out is 3.5 jack. My question is, with a 3.5 to optical converter will that give me 5.1 to my receiver? It, as suggested will I only get stereo.

On laptop is a toshiba, with VGA out
Other is an Acer with Hdmi out, but my receiver does not have Hdmi

Can you use this with the Acer HDMI output?
[Link: gefen.com]

Extracts the digital audio from the HDMI and outputs bitstream audio via optical.

If it is truly an analog 3.5mm output as you say, it definitely won't output 5.1.

However, as some have alluded to, some laptops, particularly Apple, actually are capable of outputting optical audio (toslink) out of the 3.5mm connection via a special adapter.

The only way to know if the laptop in question does output digital audio through the 3.5mm connection is to read the manual, or in some cases to look inside the connection for a red glow.

You can also always get an external sound card that does it.
The less I say, the smarter I will appear

Thanks, I think my question has been answered. I'm going to look into an extension sound card.
