Hey guys. I'm connected with a supplier where I can get both of these brands now and I've been happily selling Denon. I'm going to try a Marantz on an upcoming install. I'm comparing the amplifier specs and both appear identical (with the basic ones that have been printed). On paper anyway. For knowledge sake I compared the Denon AVRX3000 to the Marantz SR6008. I got my start in car audio where better specs did, and didn't mean that an amp was better (cheater amps and the like) but I don't suspect we have the same in home audio. S/N was always a big one with better car audio amps being well above 100dB. 105-110 wasn't uncommon. These amps, some of which I still have running in my car after 15 years really sounded better than the Kenwoods and Pioneers, etc, that had S/N closer to 100. So I see that the distortion, and SN on both the Denon and Marantz are the same. Is there really something different here, or are they just dressed different.

Thanks, Craig

if anyone cares... and loves old school car audio, I'm using HiFonics VIII, from the good old days.

Denon and Marantz are currently more similar than ever before, but I think the DSP is different and that could make one sound better than the other. I choose Marantz, but only their engineers know the real differences.

That's like comparing Chevy and Cadillac or Ford and Lincoln.

Marantz has more legacy analog connectors at lower price points, Denon gives you more "cutting edge" connections and CI features at same points.

The trainers call the sounds "Warm and musical" for Marantz, "Clean and dynamic" for the Denon. Comparing the sound quality if a mid-fi AV receiver is kind of pointless, IMO.

I figured as much.

They are pretty much going to be the same as far as I am concerned. We sold Marantz when we were able to be the only ones to carry it. Then they dropped the bottom out and let everyone and their grandma carry it so we quit. They were always rock solid, but so were the Denons we sold right along side them, so even before they were merged under D&M, they both performed well.

Speaking of old school car audio, I am a die hard Phoenix Gold guy myself. I did just throw a box with 2 old RF Audiophile 12s in the back of my VW with a PG Xenon 200.4. My MPS-2500 is sitting on a shelf until I can get it recapped and safely operational. Then I will source an MS-2125 and do a proper install one of these days. Eclipse 8053 is what I am using right now, but would love to find a mint Alpine CDA-7939/PRA-H400 combo for nostalgia's sake.

Those old HiFonics amps are beasts BTW.

+1000 on Marantz. Thought the Denon and Marantz were cut from the same cloth.

Took both to a client's house and the Marantz won

So even thought the specs are basically the same, the Marantz will just sound better? I like that you actually did a side by side comparison.

CDA7939?!? I havn't heard of that one in a while. I'm running a Kenwood Excelon CD head to an Audio Control 4.1 to an Audio Control 6XS. A HiFonics Odin to my MB Quart fronts, a Pluto to my factory rears, and a Hercules to my Single JL 12W3. I love it. I would love to do another system with some Phoenix Gold M series amps... maybe in my son's car. He's 10 so I have a few years to find the stuff, haha. Long live Old School car audio!

I think it depends on what your idea of "better" is. Do you like warm, rich and musical... or bright and dynamic? For me... I've always liked the Marantz sound, but particularly now as it's a good match to my slightly bright speakers.

And speaking of Marantz... anyone know what the odds of fixing a "Check Sub<->1394" error on a SR9600 is? Bit of research shows the iLink board (which I don't use) is the culprit, and it does still work, but the error keeps flashing on the display every 20 seconds or so (even if I turn the display off) and my peripheral vision keeps noticing it.

The big difference to me is the warranty; 3 year vs 1 year. The Marantz are also definitely more musical/warm sounding.

But then I can't tell when the thing drops randomly from THX to plain Dolby mode. :-)

I dropped Denon in favor of Marantz in 2006. Marantz sounds better to my ears as well.

A waste of time & energy to worry about the sonic differences between the two. I believe they are both built in the same place too!?
