I am looking to find out what ports are open on Charter internet. I tried some port checkers and couldn't find any. I called and their support is worthless. First woman told me the port is open, just plug the wire in the back. Seriously? You are an internet provider tech support person and don't know what a port is? I told her no, I need to forward ports and am looking to find what ports are open, or have them open a couple for me. I have had Cablevision open ports in the past. She said they cannot do that. I asked to speak to a level 2 tech. She put me on hold, and after 20 minutes her supervisor gets on the phone. So the supervisor told me they cannot check what ports are open on their end, and they cannot open any ports. She also told me that she is the top level of support they have, which I know is BS. I have had Charter now for an hour and half and am ready to remove it. The problem is the alternative is Uverse. Time to move.

I've never found any ports blocked by charter. Most of my customers use charter for Internet and I have never had a problem forwarding ports. Are you using their router? Or are you providing the router?

Using my own. Tried with a netgear I had lying around and a Ubiquiti Air Router I took off the truck. Do you remember by any chance some ports that were definitely open?

If you are using your own router, you will need to forward the ports manually. I'm pretty sure traffic is allowed on all ports from Charter.

Correct.
I've never had an issue port forwarding with Charter.

Interesting. All the port checking tools failed on the more common ports I typically use. I have not forwarded ports on an Air Router before, but I have many Netgear and even that is not working. Perhaps there is an issue with the router, it is one I have had laying around for a while.

Couple of things,

When you say you are using your own router, I assume then that the modem is just the stand alone cable modem (probably a Motorola surfboard) and not the charter modem/router combo. Am I correct?

Second, all port forwarding check tools I have used only work if the port is forwarded to an IP address and an active device is at that IP address. So make sure your device has the correct IP address and is connecting to the Internet. Then in your router forward the ports to that address. Then run the check tools.

I had a problem where I set everything up but never bothered to test my device's connection to the Internet. I wasted a lot of time trying to figure it out and had the ISP involved. It ended up that in the network settings of the device I had fat fingered the last three digits of the ip address. I didnt notice because my software auto detected the device on the network. Fixed that then everything worked.

Just wanted to update. Finally got a chance to check into this more. I confirmed that the Netgear router I have has issues, and in fact it completely died during my testing today, well sort of. It will not synch up with the modem. I replaced it with a Linksys I had lying around and tested and the port forwarding worked fine. I can confirm what ports work now, and will try the Ubiquiti again. If I can't get it to work I will just stick with the Linksys for now. I don't have too much time to mess with it.

TCP and UDP?

Might need both.
