Weren't these all digital two-channel? See, I never used it, either, but I think that's the reason I avoided wasting any time on it.

Avoid ARC and just use an optical cable. Too many problems with ARC.

Several of us have tried to use arc, and so far I haven't found one person that got it to work correctly. Find something more productive to do with your time. Like hunting for Bigfoot.

With ARC you always have to use a specific hdmi port on the television as well as a specific port on the receiver. These vary by make and manufacturer so check the manuals for your equipment.
You must have CEC turned on in both devices as well. (Warning.. This will screw with your automation macros and you will have to make programming adjustments. Again varies by equipment). It doesn't just affect your macros for you apps input either. It can affect all of your macros as CEC will put the TV and receiver on inputs that it thinks they should be on rather than where you want them.
Your cabling must also support ARC. If the HDMI cable doesn't or the balun system doesn't then it won't work.
As mentioned it is much easier to use the audio out of the TV if this is in any way an option.

FWIW, ARC is supposed to be one of the added features in the next spec of HDBaseT due out later this year.

As mentioned it is much easier to use the audio out of the TV if this is in any way an option. SOme newer receivers (current Pioneers anyway) allow you to turn on CEC but without "Synch". Meaning the communication is there for ARC but without HDMI Control. Automation and macros will work fine with this setting. ARC depends on the TV to sense the HDMI connection from the receiver and as many have stated I haven't seen it work. I'm going to try it out again on a friends system with a Denon 1913 and new Panasonic 60" ST60 later this week.

It didn't matter how I programmed the remote, it would just switch inputs whenever it wanted. Extremely frustrating. It seemed like if the system was powered on, it wanted to, and did switch to the ARC input. Fun when all you want to do is watch tv.

am i missing something? We have made it work for several customers using Onkyo and Samsung. We also have it set up in out show room.Very long "on" macro with control system because it will switch to tv/cd input as soon as tv and Onkyo are powered on. We started using Optical cables instead, We no longer use Onkyo so we have gone away from ARC. Also, I am not aware of an HDMI extender that supports ARC. Use a optical cable instead.

I don't even try. If a customer asks to feed audio back on a system in which the wiring is not in place and cannot be run, I simply say, nope. The headaches it will cause both the client and myself is just not worth it. If they have a receiver, plug the sources in and use the streaming options on the bluray or other media streaming device. Pretty much everytime I explain WHY it is not a good idea to do this the customer understands.

I have set it up successfully more than several times. You are only at the mercy of the combination of equipment and your own customness to get it to work. :)
