On TVs I don't like it, it is like watching 3D through a window. You really need a good size for that immersion to be any good. On decent projector systems I enjoy it.

I think the first movie I saw in 3D was Avatar in the movie theater and I really liked it.
I then saw few different Sammy's with 3D contents; one was a 55" and the other two were 60". All gave me headache.

I don't know if this is an active vs. passive technology thing, or if it's just my unusually wide peripheral vision that was screwing me up.

Over the next few months, I will be upgrading my aging Panny PT-AE4000U.
I would like to keep it at about $3K-3.5K cost.

I worry that active 3D glasses that ship with all 3D PJs that I've seen in my price range will give me same issues (headache) that I've experienced when watching Sammy 3D TVs.
Again, I didn't have this issue when watching Avatar in theater, so I’m not sure if that's (a)quality of movie, (b)size of screen, or (c)active vs. passive 3D glasses technology.

Any experiences similar to mine that can confirm or dismiss my worries?

Is there windows allowing light in the rooms you've watched 3D content? Where you watching during the day or night?

I cannot watch 3D in rooms with daylight in older active IR setups. The flicker drives me up the wall! The newer bluetooth glasses are much better and reduce the flicker by 99%. I would the flickering is what's causing the issues. Reducing natural light, overhead light, and even light coming from the gear is critical to not have any headache causing annoyances.

I can tell you the Epson 3020 is awesome for an inexpensive 3D projector! When I watched The Hobbit, it was in a totally dark basement. I did see out of the corner of my eye the Popcorn Hour backlight flickering a little bit but it didn't bother me because it was out of view from the glasses. IDK, I might try different movie this weekend. Yogi Bear has come crazy 3D scenes and it might be worth watching the whole thing to see if it causes a headache or some fatigue.

I recently had an epiphany about why I can't stand 3D. I have always found even the best implementations to be more distracting from the movie than any way helping to engross into the movie. Even on the biggest screens in town, I always found it a little distracting when you move your head just a little you will catch a glimpse of the edge of the screen where the 3D effect goes away.

The (hopefully) last 3D movie I saw I realized that the even bigger thing that was annoying me is the fact that not the whole scene is in focus and this is a very unnatural way to view the world. Our brains in a true 3D environment (the real world) can cause our eyes to on some thing near then something far away almost instantaneously. Yet in Hollywood, cameras can't keep the the whole field of view in focus and out of focus 3D looks terrible. I think that this is also why animated movies tend to look better in 3D because the whole animated environment is in focus and your eye can wander over the scene without coming across a blurry object.

Of course now if you have read this, you will start to notice this problem and be as annoyed as I am by 3D.

Sorry,

Kurt (my longest post ever)

I want to like 3D, I really do.
We live in 3D world, and so the idea of replicating the 3D experience on the movie screen is appealing.
Like I said in earlier post; I'm going to buy a replacement for my aging Panny PT-AE4000U.
When I do, the new PJ will be a 3D unit. It will most likely come with a set of 3D glasses, so I'll try few movies.
Unless someone can tell me that the OEM 3D glasses suck and that I should try aftermarket ones, if this 3D experiment at my house doesn't work, I'll drop the 3D as an option all together and that will be that.
