I have a new project coming up in a local retirement community and was just informed that the entire community is serviced by CenturyLink for video. Has anyone here dealt with CenturyLink hardware? Does it have discrete IR, can it be controlled via rs232 or IP from a control sys...? The system designer on the project can find no mention of hardware on the CenturyLink site...
Any help/info appreciated!

Talk with your tech connection at the facility, even if it's a guy in overalls, standing there with a plunger in his hand.
Could be whoever is selling them the hardware really wants their guy to install it Could be they'll put you in contact with the right person Could be they won't have a clue what you're talking about and you'll have to give them the choice of added charges from you to do this research, or no remote control of their systems.
Is there definitely even RCS232 control? You may have to use the remotes the stuff comes with to snatch the IR codes. That might be all there is.

yup...looks like I'm going to be capturing the IR remote onsite [unless, of course, the codes are at some bizarre/unsupported carrier freq...]

Where are you? CenturyLink just took over our market from Qwest (maybe they bought Qwest?) a couple of years ago. They do not offer video services though. Just curious what it is all about. Is it similar to FiOS? We also do not have that here. It is DTV, Dish, or Cable One. Or if you are me, ATSC and no bill. :)

The only "video" that CenturyLink offers around here is to bundle DirecTV. They sort of brand it as being their own but it's definitely DirecTV. So there is a possibility that is the situation.

They bundle with DirecTV here as well, but I was assuming this was something different due to his request. Who does not have the IR codes for DirecTV? Who does not know that you can control them via IR, RS232, and IP? He also mentioned "Prism" in his second post....there has to be something else going on here. :)
I just want to know so I am somewhat in the loop if they decide to bring that to our market.

I've got a good friend that works for centurylink. He was originally Sprint, which spun off local service, then sold out to the little mom and pop company, Centurytel, who changed heir name after taking over a couple bigger companies. The problem though, is they still try to operate like a small business. After asking over Embark, they had phone service disrupted to thousands of customers because of an administrative error that caused them to not pay the electric bills on several switching stations. Another time, they tried to save money by putting ventilation fans in server facilities, and based on the outdoor temperature, the fans would suck cool air in to control the temps of the servers, instead of running ac. But the genius behind this idea never considered that humidity control is just as important in a server facility as is temperature.
Good luck in your endeavors

We have had this video service in our area for about a year. The receiver is Motorola (sorry, can't remember the model number). The service uses Century Link's "internet" connection. They also install a router to connect to the Motorola receiver.
We learned IR from the remote and had no issues (used ProControl). No worries on discrete "on" & "off" because it never powers off.

Thanks for the info Eastern A/V--Glad to hear I'll not confront anything nutty on what needs to be a quick turnaround job.
Hey Ernie...What's "suspicious" about the word "video" in this context?
