Highly recommended! Great movie/documentary about the infamous recording studio. Interviews with some rock greats etc.

I saw some previews of that and thought it looked really good. Dave Grohl directed it. It's on my hit list for sure.

Yep.  Awesome.

I've got 2 more.

"Searching for Sugarman"  Incredibly unbelievable story.

Also, I'm looking forward to "Beware of Mr. Baker"

about Ginger Baker from Cream.  Haven't seen it yet.

I have owned 3 different Sound City amplifiers a Concorde, a Fifty, and a One Fifty.
Oh wait. You're not talking about guitar amps from the 60's - 70's. Duh!

I heard that documentary was good. I hope it becomes available soon. Theater or disc.
They call me the "Thread Killer". Just watch!

Excellent film.

It was cool to see some of my musical heroes and some of my favorite albums profiled as well. I expected to hear about Fleetwood Mac and some of the others from the 70s, I was not expecting to hear so much about Rick Springfield.

I also did not know about the huge alt rock tie in with RATM, Weezer, NIN, etc.
Honestly, I thought that Nevermind was recorded at Smart Studios in Madison WI. I knew that they hired Butch Vig to engineer/produce the 2nd album because they really liked his work with Killdozer. After seeing the doc, I read that 'Polly' was the only song on the album that was recorded in Madison, before Grohl joined and before they went to Sound City.

They spent some time discussing the Frank Black and the Catholics self titled album from 1998, which was an absolute beast of an album. The best lineup with Charles since the Pixies. That entire album was recorded live to 2-track, which saved them a ton on studio time.

I recall reading that Butch Vig heard Cobain rehearsing Polly, and he had him plug directly into the board and do a live take of it, and ended up putting that 1st run live take on the album.

Got home tonight and Sound City was on my doorstep. As I'm watching it occurs to me how many of these artists/songs have always sounded so good to me. It's like a light bulb went on over my head. Love this documentary, I think Dave did an awesome job.

Being an old codger who was fortunate to see all of the great concerts back in the day:
Beatles
Stones (early before they sucked)
Rod Stewart (same as above)
Burrito Brothers
Byrds
Buffalo Springfield
Iggy Pop / Stooges
Jethro Tull
Kinks
Robin Trower
The EELS
Yes
Early Jefferson Airplane
The Sonics
The Whalers (Louie Louie)
Fleetwood Mac (w / Peter Green before the chicks ruined them)
Dylan
WHite Stripes
George Harrison (solo)
McCartney
Hendrix
Early Led Zep
The Who (with Keith Moon)
Cream
Blind Faith
Neil Young (early)
Eagles (before they sucked)
The Clash
Sex Pistols
Nirvana (before they were famous)
John Prine
Tom Waits (early - and he took me and my brother to dinner- long story)
Grateful Dead
Jethro Tull
Yes
Robert Cray
Emerson Lake & Palmer
Kinks
Yardbirds
Clapton (early)
CSN
CSN&Y
Creedence Clearwater Revival
Soundgarden (early)
Stephen Stills / Manasass
Deathcab for Cutie
Killing Joke
Flock of Seagulls (hey! they were great)
Bowie (early)
Blondie
Crazy Horse
Soft Machine
Vanilla Fudge
Grateful Dead
Youngbloods
Turtles
MC5
The Band
FOO FIGHTERS
Posies
Traveling Wilbury's
Tom Petty & Hearbreakers
The Pretenders (early)
Pearl Jam (early)

and a few others...

So I have seen a few great shows...All I gotta say there are a few David Grohl / Foo Fighters haters... But, I love the guy to death, and have total respect for him. Yeah OK some of their stuff kind of blows, but a lot of their stuff is amazing, they are one of the groups that got me re - energized and hopeful that Rock and Roll will Never die. Thanks, Dave!!!!

I've also heard and read that he is totally down to earth fellow and a very nice person.

I just saw this over the weekend and would highly recommend it to any other music fans out there. On top of being a good flick for some of the reasons mentioned above, it's also an interesting look into that world's transition from analog to digital and how it affected the business of music in general.

Strong recommendation for the film about the great Atlantic Records engineer, Tom Dowd. Check out "The Language of Music".
