I really need a new laptop for programming and a little other business use. This seems pretty decent but there may be a better one for this price.

What are you programming? I am using a 17" ASUS 1600x900 with 8 gig memory and a 2.8 processor that was less than $ 500. Use it for Crestron, Lutron, and all the other smaller systems we do.

It runs Windows RT; you can't use it for programming. You need a Windows 8 Pro system. However, I'd buy a Windows 7 system while they last. Windows 8 is crap on a standard non-touchscreen computer.

Apple. Create a great mobile operating system. Work the kinks out for 4 generations and slowly begin to morph their desktop platform towards the mobile os.

Microsoft. Dump your old mobile OS. Finally create a usable OS (win 7). Just when people like windows again you dump that OS, create a new mobile/touch OS (multiple confusing versions mind you) that sucks on desktops. Expect everyone to be fine with the confusion and the immediate removal of two decades worth of windows navigation (where the hell is the start button).

Why do they even bother? Why not open source everything and invest what's left into one of the companies that will be around in ten years?

Pricey, we have a few laptops with windows crap for the field, an office pc anda laptop with Linux Ubuntu only, one laptop with windows and Ubuntu on it for the office as well here on side, it's off most of the time.

You can probably buy 2 laptops for the price and do what we do, or even spend a bit more and get two pretty decent ones.

At your price point i would go with this one. It has 1920X1080 resolution. The one you are looking at is 1600X900. [Link: newegg.com]

If you want to spend an extra $100 get this one. Dedicated graphics a little more ram. [Link: newegg.com]

Both are beasts in terms of weight/size. Have you looked at 15" models with 1920X1080? You can actually see more than typical lower res 17" models on display at big box. The only reason to go up to 17" imo is if you are going to get 1920X1080 and just want it on a bigger screen.

I cant comment about the operating systems versions etc. If i were buying a new laptop today i would do so assuming i also needed to get a copy of win 7 to install after formatting the HDD.

It's not Windows RT, it runs Windows 8.

For the money your spending, I would go with this guy. Windows 7, SSD & HDD for fast boot times, USB 3.0, etc. smaller screen res, but res isn't everything.

You're right; even though there is a Windows RT logo on the screen and an R in the model name; it's still a Windows 8 machine, with no mention of "Pro" in the Specs. ..just when you thought they couldn't screw up the naming conventions any more, Dell adds fuel to the fire.

Just get a Mac. Microsoft is a sinking ship right now.
