We have run into this problem now twice this week. First was a cisco png 150 through a denon reciver, second is a motorola png 150n through a yamaha ysp, both over HDMI.

When you first fire them up, they work great. But if you switch away to a different source, then back, the video works fine but no audio. The only way to get it back is to either unplug the hdmi from the cable box and plug it back in, or pull the power plug from the cable box and let it reboot. Once you have audio, as long as you dont switch away from it it stays stable.

When it happened with the first box, I figured it was a bad cable box so I went and got it swapped at comcast. The new one did the same thing. I tried every combination of power down and power up sequences but got no love there.

Any one else had this issue and have a work around here?

Thanks in advance

First suggestion;
If both AVR's offer Component to HDMI up-conversion do so.
This will save a lot (and I do mean a lot) of problems.
If that is not an option please give me a call.

Might want to check the audio out settings on the cable box if there are any. Maybe dumbing down the audio output format will make it happier.

I just solved a real head-banger with a similar but worse situation. A Toshiba NVR had two outputs and we wanted to use the HDMI output for a kitchen TV, switching the TV to it when needed. When we had a picture it was great, but as soon as we switched away from the NVR's HDMI output, the NVR's Windows settings forgot there was ever a second monitor output and totally killed the signal!

The solution was a Gefen HDMI Detective Plus. It works. While programming it we found that the TV didn't have a reliable EDID anyway, but the Detective solved that. It makes the source think it's always connected to exactly the same display, no matter what you do downstream from it. I've also seen the Detective change a multiple-HDMI-input system from 5 seconds of weirdness to instant video switching. As I"ve said, HDMI works best when you use everything at your disposal to beat the living crap out of it!
A good answer is easier with a clear question giving the make and model of everything.

Ernie is correct - this sounds like a classic EDID issue. Another piece like the Gefen HDMI Detective+ is the "Dr. HDMI," which I and alot of other dealers have used successfully for issues like this. Take a look and learn more here: [Link: vidabox.com]

There are volume-based dealer discounts on this piece as well. Feel free to message if we can be of help - best of luck!
