Installed a URC dimmer today.

Programmed an MX 890 and MX980. Both of them control the switch but only within 3-5' away.

Any ideas why?

Any chance you ended up with remote and switches of a different frequency?  I haven't messed with these for a few years but seem to remember that both are available in two frequencies and if they are mis-matched it only works with a very short range.

Create a phantom basestation and set it to address 0. Assign your dimmers to this base. No guarantees this is your problem but they say to do it.

This is likely it. I was shipped a MRFB dimmer when I ordered an MRFA a while back. I isn't realize it and couldn't figure out why it would only work from 3-5 feet away. Once I figured out I was shipped the wrong one, switched it out and it's been perfect since.
