I lucked out about six years ago. Was working on an issue with a very large install. After about three techs could not figure it out a supervisor came there. He was able to schedule a tech that could handle the job.
I got the supervisor's email and cell number. Now when ever I need something I call him he he gets me what I need. One day a client had a bad cable box, I called him and within an hour he was on site with a new box. He make my life easy, and makes me look good when a client is upset with Comcast and I can say let me call my guy there and I get things taken care of. Can't say enough good about him!!
Yes!! Every once in a while, I stumble upon a tech. whether from the cable co, DTV, etc., that actually has an ounce of common sense, and knows at least how whatever they are supposed to be installing works. My question is why can they not train their other employees to be like these guys?
I called the cable co. when my neighbor cut the line feeding my house that went through his back yard. I explained to them what happened in detail. When the kid showed up, he wanted to come in and test the signal at my modem. Then he saw that I was not using one of their modems so he wanted to connect his and test that. I kept telling him that the problem, as I had explained to the people who dispatched him, was not inside my home...not even on my property! He proceeded to go out and look at the box on my house, then he walked around scratching his head for a minute. I finally went out there, and nicely told him to go knock on the neighbors' door and ask to go in their yard and fix the cable. He came back in 10 minutes. 5 minutes before he came back, I was on the internet. I must have told him 7 times that the cable was cut in the neighbors' yard. Maybe he was hearing impaired and could not afford a hearing aid. That would be his only excuse for his stupidity!
Then there was the time I watched the cable guy and the dish guy fight like 3rd graders over who's cable the only coax from demarc belonged to! Someone was going to have to run a new line....but the dish guy got their first, so he used the one that was already there.
Cable guy: "That is "my" wire. It goes out to where my box goes!"
Dish guy: "Too bad buddy. You should have got here earlier."
Cable guy: "Well I need that cable for the modem."
Dish guy: "Sorry man, we already spliced it in the attic and hooked it up to our box, and if you cut it when we leave, there is going to be trouble."
Cable guy: "So now I have to run a new cable?"
Dish guy: "Looks that way."
Cable guy: "But.....but....that was MY wire"
Dish guy: "No...the wire belongs to the homeowner. She called us to install Dish. We used the wires that were there. End of story. Have fun. See ya!"
It was a hilarious banter. I thought the cable guy was going to tear up. He called his supervisor and explained....then it was silent for a minute. Then he stomped back to his truck, and sat in it for 15 minutes or so. Then another cable guy showed up, and they proceeded to reluctantly run a new cable for the modem.
Just yesterday, I had a cable guy tell a client that no one should EVER try and program the cable remote to operate anything besides the TV. Really? EVER? I agree with him, but for a different reason. What a moron.
I better go see what they pay, because if I do not need any kind of skill or sense, and it pays decent, it might be an alright gig. ;)
