help... at some point in the last 3 months my iphone(remote ap) refuses to work.
i no longer get the remote ability to up down left and right
so i figure id start by doing all the updates and setting up home sharing on my computers and atv
nope doesnt work unless i have a computer running in the background... thats stupid. and then i still cant watch my movies
is there any way to use my iphone with my atv like i used to without my computers being on?
if worse comes to worse ill just slap an emitter and that bitch and program my remotes to send the atv ir commands
the reason i love my apple tv is the built in hard drive and the ability to not have computers on to watch and listen to my stuff...

As far as I know, they've gotta be on for home sharing to work on ATV 2, 3. And now your 1 apparently with the upgrade.

Other thing I just noticed the other day, while connecting my ATV3 that I didn't realize...
When you open up ATV, it opens up your iTUNES account. I've done plenty of ATV's for clients, I guess I never put 2 and 2 together. But when it was in my house, my laptop was only a few feet away. I could hear it chiming as I would click things on the ATV.
Called one of my techs, said "do you know it does this"
I got a
"No sh!t sherlock"

Are you talking about the Apple remote operating your Mac? Or are you saying the Apple TV automatically starts iTunes in your computer? If it does then we don't have to tell people to turn on iTunes before operating Apple TV, which I always do. I wonder if it wakes up a sleeping computer, too,to start on iTunes.

Yep. I was mistaken. I looked into it just a moment ago. The ATV doesn't open up iTUNES, and it won't wake it up. The sound that I was hearing is the remote control controlling the volume on the Mac. I didn't know it did that.
It won't open up iTUNES, it won't wake it up, and it won't recognize home sharing when it's sleeping.

So, if you go to Settings, you don't see your iPhone when you click on Home Sharing- just the rest of the computers? If you start playing the music on your iPhone, do you see an Apple speaker icon, like then you use iTunes on your computer?

My mechanic told me, "I couldn't repair your brakes, so I made your horn louder." |

Yes. You can have the computer off and still use Airplay from your phone to your AppleTV. If the icon isn't showing up, generally there are two fixes for this. Obviously, first make sure the Iphone and AppleTV are on the network.
1. Settings->General->International->Language-> Change the language to French (for example). Remember you're going to have a hard time reading the iphone in a minute, so use a language that you can decipher a little.
2. Go back through the previous steps and change the language back to English.
3. Now check to see if the icon is there. Sometimes this works, sometimes it doesn't.
OR
1. Try to hard reset the iphone. Hold the home and the power button down until it goes dark and the appl icon appears. Release, let it cycle through power up.
Check to see it the Airplay icon is there now.
