Quick question that I have probably tried that I just can't remember.

Have to set up an MSC-400 tomorrow and someone (the sales guy) forgot to order the RS232 cables for it. Can MX-850 programming cables be used for this in a pinch? Have a big pile of those in my bag...

I think I did use them a couple of times. But I think I had to cut them and swap the two wires for pins two and three around.

The MSC 400 actually uses a 4 conductor 3.5mm. I have cut apart a 3.5mm to component video cable and successfully made that work, but if I recall correctly a normal 3 conductor or stereo 3.5mm shorts a connection (can't remember which)
The less I say, the smarter I will appear
