Has anyone installed this gateway outdoors? How have you protected it?

All of the time. Depends upon visibility (or lack thereof) and/or intended range. Many times we put them in a sealed nema enclosure with a gasket for the antenna or a bulkhead antenna extension with external hex nut and seal.
My personal favorite though was specifically for around a pool. We put one in a sealed pvc underground landscape box and then triple sealed the gateway in plastic with desiccant pack. The lid was then placed over the landscape box and then one of our rock speakers sat on top of it. That one makes me smile to this day just thinking about it :-)
