Just wondering. Even newer boxes from Motorola, Cisco, etc., seem to be much larger than I'd ever imagine necessary for what they do - especially those without DVRs. Look at Roku, ATV, etc. So? Are QAM tuners still made with vacuum tubes, or something?
If it's not simple, it's not sufficiently advanced.

Because they're so awesome, that their awesomeness cannot be contained in a small box?

Or they're pieces of crap.

Take your pick.

Well DirecTV is attempting to make things smaller and the H25 boxes are ridiculously hot.

I like that they are so big, because it adds further legitimacy to the concept of centralized systems, which is where it seems 90% of our work comes from, either directly or indirectly.

I'd love it if they were 2U and directly rack mountable!

You could prob fit a DVR into an 8U chassis. Maybe you can find a chassis ready made from Lexicon.

I could say the same for a lot of networking gear.

If they could build a quad tuner dual GUI (basically a 2 in 1 super box) for CI that would be wicked....but the market is so slim....like that Sonos CI piece everyone wants....but we will probably never see. :(

The small boxes are nuclear hot, and they fail.

Quit your bitchin about the size. Put in the ones that work, and put some Middle Atlantic CompCools to keep them working.

The above answer, heat, is a good one. Also that the size provides legitimacy. The many cable boxes that are DVRs also must be larger than simple receivers... and then, if the cable companies make the receivers smaller, maybe they will be perceived as less valuable and customers will complain about paying the same subscription amount for a box they can't record on. I know recording costs extra, but the channels aren't "rented" at a higher rate when you can record them, are they?
A good answer is easier with a clear question giving the make and model of everything.

The boxes are shit and there isn't enough competition. Time Warner's boxes are god awful compared to direct tv in my area. As is there on screen guide.

Just like a diamond, size means everything.

Maybe people would have less of a problem if the boxes could be smaller, with a lot of flashing lights.

Comcast's stand alone STBs, without the DVR, are pretty small. Picked up an SD box a few weeks ago that is the size of a deck of cards. No IR receiver, just an IR port; have to use the external IR receiver that ships with it. Not sure of the size of new HD boxes, though.
