Works like a charm. I've used it several times, no issues at all. Keeps surround sound via HDMI, and uses the optical out to be down converted to 2.0. Cheapest place is on Amazon.

I am using a couple of these to feed Apple TV to a Crestron analog audio matrix system. To be tested tomorrow...

here is an option i am looking at:

Dont get that piece. I tried using those and the audio kept cutting in and out after several minutes. We bought 4 of them. They all did the same thing. nifty idea, but no good.

To clarify, In this particular job, we used a Binary 4x4 matrix switch, but mirrored 2 zones to 2 surround sounds. To avoid house audio, we tried using those behind the TV's that couldn't decode Dolby and selecting the use of analog audio. Worked great for 2 minutes, then audio cut in and out at random behind all the TV's. Picture was fine 100% though. Long story short, we got a composite switcher and soldered RCA's on extra cat5's we ran in the pre-wire, then it became rock solid.

For ATV we just set the ATV to PCM output and use the $20 Monoprice DAC with the optical connection. Never fails.

So you cant get true surround sound out of it in a 5.1 audio zone? Spend the extra $60 and future-proof it.

I'm actually using the Binary 4x4 as well. The 4 outputs are TV1, TV2, AVR and headphones. So, the decoder is for the headphones. (The idea is that at any time one TV plays audio through the AVR to the 5.1 speaker system and the other through the headphones.)

Unfortunately, I ordered the unit before I saw your post just to give it a shot. I imagine I will have the same experience as you. Looking to purchase another of the suggested items in this thread as well. Thanks.
