Looking to convert HDMI output from video matrix to 2 channel analog audio. Sources are cable TV, Apple TV and PS3. Any suggestions on a suitable device? Thanks.

Or, the cheapest HDMI DAC you can buy:

Works PERFECTLY. We use these when we do ATV in component distribution. No problems with video res or output or any sound quality issues.

That's sure cheap! Looks like it doesn't support Dolby?

how is it going to support dolby digital? it has a stereo audio output (which you state you are looking for) and it doesnt have an hdmi passthrough out! so im not sure how or why it would or could support DD.
I love supporting product that supports me!

Need it to decode DD and output it as stereo. Otherwise, if the audio stream within the HDMI signal was in DD format, I would get no audio output.

What he said.
Most D/A convertors do NOT handle Dolby encoded material.

keep in mind that the audio decoder - which is where this discussion about DD support focuses - is a separate piece from the HDMI receiver.

turns out that monoprice peice is made by conversions technologies and paying considerable more for. CT sent me dozen and they freakin had mono's logo on them! got a nice credit. thats just WRONG!

great units by the way. love them. but i wont put something that says monoprice in a job. lol.

You might consider an inexpensive receiver and use its L/R outputs for what you need. Any of these devices report back to the source that it can only accept DD or 2 channel PCM, so that is all the source device wil output.

If you have multiple devices using the same source simultaneously you may lose the surround or higher quality audio formats in the other locations. An inexpensive receiver will not only deocde these but if the receiver is set up with no center channel that information will be incorporated into the L/R signal.

Works like a charm. I've used it several times, no issues at all. Keeps surround sound via HDMI, and uses the optical out to be down converted to 2.0. Cheapest place is on Amazon.

the extron and lindy piece look good, so thanks for that.

i actually thought of an inexpensive AVR, but would like to avoid the heat and space issues if i can, and also keep things more streamlined.

An inexpensive receiver will not only deocde these but if the receiver is set up with no center channel that information will be incorporated into the L/R signal.

wouldn't any decoder do this as well?

the gefen piece is just what i want, except it does not have HDMI in.

here is an option i am looking at:
