How do you use different video and audio sources in the the main zone. I have a newly installed Denon 3312. Everything is working great have Zone 2 hooked up the remote app works great. Yesterday I wanted to watch the TV in zone 1 and also listen to music in zone one. Of course everyting is hooked up with HDMI and using the GUI. So if I try to listen to the radio of internet music my TV goes to the Denon Menu. I have cablevision can no longer get TV without the cable box. I used to run a seperate coax cable to TV this no longer works. Thanks for any suggestions.

Get an external net radio source such as Sonos. Wire it into the same audio input associated with the video source. Get a control system. Create a macro to call the video source HDMI then call the analog input of the same source which is wired to your Sonos player. Control playback of source from Sonos app.

Done.

That'll be $95 (trip fee waived).

I came up with a similar remedy. I confirm Sound SD's response.  I'm going to give you a break on my consult fee though.  So that'll be an additional $110.

However, Sound didn't answer your question about the TV. (What do you expect for $95).  You can use your Universal remote or Control system to change inputs on the TV, run an optical cable from the Audio out from the TV back to the Denon, you can assign the optical audio.

Why would you want to watch Cable without the cable box?

Welcome to 2012.

Thank you for the reply's. What I was asking was from my current setup it there a way to listen to music and watch TV at the same time. Can you change the HDMI switching to different audio and video sources at the same time.

Connect CATV with HDMI to assigned Video input as usual.
Connect audio component to a non video option input (i.e. CD)

Power up the system, watch CATV first.
Then switch to listen to CD and leave both TV and Cable box ON.

This is incorrect.

That is exactly what was answered for you by first two responses.

With your current equipment, connect the desired external audio source (cd player, ipod dock, etc) to the analog input of the video input you are watching. When you want to watch and listen to the video source, select that source only. When you want to watch the source and listen to another, select the watch source which should be set to the hdmi input, then select analog which will override to the source you selected while maintaining the HDMI video source. Plug in whatever audio source you want to this input. The receiver thinks you are just playing the same source but you prefer its analog inputs when in fact you are playing a different source.

Your challenge will be finding a source for audio that you can control without a heads up video display. Which is why I suggested Sonos.

Your other challenge will be sending the analog source command with the OEM remote.

So... in short.... read my first reply.

Or wire all video HDMI to TV and audio to receiver. Or all video HDMI to TV and optical out of TV to receiver but you lose the GUI from the amp for volume if you do this.

There is no way to do this from your current setup. That's why people described things you would have to do to make it work. If it worked from your current setup, you would have figured out which buttons to push.

Since HDMI includes its own audio, the answer is no. However, as described, it's possible (with many brands of AVR) to select an analog audio input for a video input; so if you plug that other source into the analog input jacks of the video source that you want to work this way, switching the audio from "Auto" or "Digital" to "Analog" gives you exactly what you're asking for. EXACTLY.

But... really? Didn't the HDMI Gods, in their wisdom, make it necessary for the Analog choice not to be able to be implemented when HDMI is plugged in?
A good answer is easier with a clear question giving the make and model of everything.

Why even go through the reciever.
That cable box has a s video connection.
Why not connect it directly to the TV from the cable box.
Then switch the TV input after you select the audio source from the reciever.

Is there a reason why this would not work?
Instead of asking me why my price is high ask the other guys why they are low.

I believe what you would like to do is still possible, earlier Denon models used to have a button on the front panel called "Video Select", you selected the music source, then pressed the "Video Select" button and selected the video source.

I don't believe there is the front panel button any longer, hopefully there is one on the remote control, from what I read in the user manual on page 91, it looks like you can still do it, unfortunately they don't seem to go into further detail, but it gives you somewhere to start.
If so, try setting it up on one of the "Quick Select" buttons for future use.

I would suggest connecting the music sources via analogue, digital may still work though.

All that being said, if (and I would guess from your post that you aren't) you are using a control system, with RS232 or IP control, this would be easy.

Change the video source when you select CD/DVD, Internet Radio, etc.

I believe the HDMI gods in all their wisdom killed the video select option we used to know and love. The option is still there if you want to hook everything up analog.

You have a video matrix switcher and an audio matrix switcher separately. You can do what ever you want.
