I have an older K-scape system that I was given and am trying to figure out what to do with it. It is a 5RU server fully loaded (5tb?) with a reader and two zones. It is in need of a new motherboard and I was wondering if anyone had any leads on how to deal with this other than the standard give K-scape $4k for a refurb unit. It has been sitting on a shelf for quite some time and I would like to do something with it or just get it out of here. Thanks for any info!

I'd say sell it cheap. It'll save you the headache.
Who says you can't put 61" plasmas up on cantilever mounts using toggle bolts? <---Thanks Ernie ;)

I would call and find out what the repair cost is. If its more than $1000...

List the working components at ebay or audiogon?. Gotta be someone out there who would love to add a zone for cheap.

....... yeah but if it is under $1,000 you might still want to convince yourself that they are going to be around 3 years from now .......... and if they are, are they still gonna support your first gen hardware?
Thank you for your considered response

Funny......yes they actually want $3k retail......I am not a dealer any longer....I have a hard time just giving up on it as I have all of the movies (1200)etc and it would be a nice toy. Maybe tomorrow I will rip it apart and see what they used. Thanks for the input.

well, actually,
kscape + removal from shelf + shotgun = free space

While addition is usually commutative, it does matter in what order you add these things together.
A good answer is easier with a clear question giving the make and model of everything.

They "offered" me a $3k flat rate to repair a server once. I decided to crack the box open since it was out of warranty and found that it was just the power supply...An off the shelf... available online for $90 power supply!

39....That is precisely why I am no longer a dealer. This very same unit had the power supply go out and they offered me the same. I fought with them for a while on it thinking that it was crazy as I knew it was the power supply. I even asked them if my client paid for the warrantee retroactively and promised to maintain it from then on if they would take care of it and they said no. After I decided that they were not interested in helping I did the same as you. It sucks that they take the best product known to man in our channel and treat it like you bought a dell computer when it needed service......I would have never had expected that after selling so many other high end products and being treated like a king when service issues came up with them.

Not sure what you mean by this.. I have never had a problem with a Kaleidescape unit other than their 1st generation BluRay vault but what disc changer on this planet doesn't have an issue?

SO you got a KScape system from someone that was likely hit by a surge that blew the motherboard and you are upset about what?

If I'm reading the OP correctly, how he came by the server and the nature of the fault is not the issue, what he is upset about is the being gouged on the cost of a hardware repair.
I've also been in a similar situation to 39cent with Kaleidescape wanting $1,400 to 'service' out-of-warranty movie players when all they needed were replacement $ 40 power supply boards. They also refused to supply the power supply board directly .... Google was more helpful.
I will not support manufacturers whose repair charges are unjustifiable to my clients. Yes, it was the best media server brand on the planet ......... a long time ago.

And the best way to make a change is finding the part, fixing the part and sharing the YOUTUBE video.

this was the very first kscape system that we sold.....retail it was $45k...and the client did not purchase the warrantee. Then a years or so after it was installed the power supply blew. I knew this as it would not power up.....pretty simple to connect the dots. Their answer was that he had not paid for the warrantee so he was SOL and would have to pay $3500 for a swap. The client was a big boy about it and said that he would be willing to pay retro actively and maintain the warrantee from then on if they were to take care of it. They said no and so i figured what the heck the warrantee is shit anyway and opened up the box. Low and behold it was the power supply so I marched my ass down the street and picked on up and he was back up and running....at a price of $100 for parts. This kept it going for another year or so and then the motherboard let out the magic smoke. He at that point was no longer interested and just said to get rid of it and moved on.
I sold 8-10 systems after that and made sure to keep my warrantee experience in mind and made clients aware of the pitfalls and it is what it is. It just left a very sour taste in my mouth that they would not in this situation make a concession to keep someone happy. I realize they have to stand their ground....and respect that. To add insult to injury a few months after this incident with the power supply they decided to start sending out a power supply service kit for $150? to service others.....so I was obviously not the only one.
Bottom Line is when you are selling a high end product and the mfg does not support you as one would expect you can form an opinion. I know how they are now and will carry on with that in mind. I love there product and wish I had not anything other to say then that but sooner than later it will no longer matter.
I am by no means upset that someone gave me a broken Kscape. I am more frustrated that it would take $3k to fix it only to have a piece that may only be worth $2500-3500 in resale from what I have seen in the market. That being the case i just found a mother board online for $40 and am gonna give it a go. If that does not work I am perfectly happy with my Apple TV.
