Seems excessively large just to trap one channel. Is that really how they did it back in the day?

"Back in the day"
In 1981 or so I worked on a project that included a video sync generator circuit. The guts of the circuit was an 18-pin IC, and other components associated with it made it require a PC board about three inches by three inches.
Around the same time, I hit the local second-hand stores and found some technical books from the 1940s. In one was a photograph of a sync generator. This one was only for black and white, and thus was a bit simpler than the nine square inches of PC board in our project.
The black and white sync generator occupied two six-foot tall equipment racks.

My point is that they did what they had to "back in the day" to make things work. This filter has screw adjustments on the side, and very likely has many coils and capacitors, probably not using ferrite but built in open air, and yep, those cans are needed. If you check the link in one of the earlier posts, you'll see a graph that shows a remarkable curve. Remember that simple speaker crossovers, the filters we're most familiar with, drop off signal at 6 dB or 12 dB PER OCTAVE, that is, double the frequency and the signal is 6 or 12 dB lower; then look at the graph. There is a notch of frequencies, much less than an octave, with an area where the response is lowered by about 60 dB. It's astounding.

ericspencer, Ernie, & TouchCommander have "hit it on the nose" We used to buy those, many many years ago, from Microwave Filter company in upstate NY for our MATV systems that required specialized trapping. Usually we needed them to suppress local radio & TV stations that were interfering with our distribution. Not really needed in this day & age.
I would say sell it on ebay but with out knowing what bandwith it was trapping, you probably won't be able to sell it. That is; unless there is a collector out there. Or, someone that has the spectrum analyzer & know how to adjust it.

Which is to say, how much do you want for it?

Just pay for shipping and you can have it. Rather that then a landfill.
I am tempted to take it apart and see why makes it tick though.

Nothing makes it tick. It is a highly selective passive anti-ticker. Passives only tick when you put ten times the rated power through them, and then they often only tick once, LOUDLY.
You have mail. In a minute or so.
