Did anyone see this guy? He left his family when the shooting started, went to his car and drove around until his girlfriend called and said it was over. Btw, she took a bullet protecting the kids [Link: huffingtonpost.com]

I cant say i wouldn't have run out without them in a panic because ive never been in that situation. Who knows what goes thru your mind. Maybe personal survival of the fittest takes over. Or maybe hes just a selfish jerk. What i can surely say is that i wouldn't have gotten in my truck and drove off. The moment i cleared the theater where other people were i think i would have snapped out of it.
Unless of course it was zombies...at that point...its everyone for themselves. I have discussed this with my girlfriend and she agrees. She laughs because im the fat one and she plans to use me as bait if we ever get cornered.

Leaving his girlfriend is one thing. Leaving his kids is a dirtbag thing to do. Some teenager took a bullet protecting this guys kids. And now he is going on tv doing interviews. Thats probably even worse than his getting in the car and driving away Check YouTube for his interviews. The comments people are leaving are great.

Everyone always tells me "when you have kids you will understand". What kills me is i saw this guy on the news a few days ago crying and they mentioned the proposal. No mention of him running outside and jumping in his truck. At least she knows where she stands during the zombie apocalypse.

These tragedies ought to give one the opportunity to think or re-think their a priori assumptions but they always seem to provide opportunities for atavistic group-think. Rural vs urban and with urban sprawl impinging on natural habitats of large predatory animals I do understand there can be a justification of using fire arms. 1980 budget cuts resulted in the asylums being emptied. With the economy causing more emotional strains some on the edge of sanity may and do crack. From a statistical point, I've never seen the justification of hand guns. If you're a hunter do you really need a M4 to kill a deer? Every hunter I've met has taken pride on his ability to take the animal down with a single shot. Most of the most fanatic seem to prefer bow and arrow as it requires more hunting skills.
When my children were small we lived within walking distance of the cinema. Yet we did not go. Or our parents came to babysit. I appreciate that we may no longer live near extended family and in these economic times a baby-sitter may not be in the budget. What happened to delaying gratification? We had to wait for the movies to come on cable. It was frustrating but one discovers the pleasures of books, or forgive me, each other. You put your child in a stroller and walk to and in a park.
I will never understand the requirement for automatic weapons in civilian hands. Others think they have a God-given right to own a Dessert Eagle. I do not pretend that I have a solution to this conundrum, particularly as it seems to be framed in emotional rather than utilitarian terms. We have forgotten Utilitarianism and so in so many respects we all respond to issues emotionally and non-rationally. I am becoming less and less sanguine about our ability to communally deal with the difficult issues confronting us, in part, due to the inability to rationally and realistically accept reality. We are in love with the fantasy; with perception being our definition of reality.
By definition these events are non-rational. What rational person would think to be a serial killer? As a resident of NYC I find the emotional pull of automatic weapons hard to comprehend. I am enthralled by castles in the air. I see the statistics of needless, accidental deaths. I wonder if we understand that life does seem made up of random events, many of them dangerous. Man seems to harm everything he touches. Ought it to be very surprising that he has turned his sight on himself? He did not have automatic weapons.....everything that this wacko had was legal and single shot. He had multiple round clips, but you have to pull the trigger each time the weapon is fired. Just wanted to clarify..............

It is hard to see some of my friends on here judge so many people. I was born and raised in Aurora, CO. I lived in that city for 16 years. I went to 3 different elementary's, Laredo middle school and Smokey Hill High. I have been in that theater 25 times at least. i lived right next to the theater. My entire family still lives there. I now reside in Arkansas and Feel helpless for my friends and family effected by this tragedy. My nephew had a ticket for that show and decided not to go. If you guys don't mind, Lets wait until some people have had some time to deal with this tragedy before this thread gets out of hand.
Thanks,

Was it dumb to bring a three month old to a theater at midnight? Yes... but its a decision the parents will regret forever... to nationally rub it in to them on such a grand scale doesn't make things better. No one expects to go to a movie and get shot at.
This jackass loser nobody got what he wanted... to be the talk of the nation... his fifteen minutes of infamy jacked up to great proportions. If only he could have been thrown in a pit and have no mention of his name ever... that would be the best punishment. That or being duct taped naked to a pole while bamboo shhots were slowly driven under each toe and fingernail.

Guys, I love America, but you gotta start getting rid of the guns.
We had our big shooting spree here over 10 years ago and they got rid off all automatic guns and all pistols (except pistol club people with lots of rules) and pretty much every other gun they could think off.
Now, we have basically no gun related crime apart from the odd criminal shooting another criminal, which is probably a good thing.
In any case, a terrible tragedy but I fear the next mass shooting is only a month or two away.

Chicago's handgun ban has been a failure. Further, Washington DC also saw a jump in handgun crimes. [Link: articles.chicagotribune.com]

The criticism of taking a 3 month old to a midnight showing has nothing to do with what transpired at the theater.

Now, we have basically no gun related crime apart from the odd criminal shooting another criminal, which is probably a good thing. Australia has never had open gun laws like the US, they have always been more restrictive, and the ban in 1996 just restricted the types of guns allowed in the country and added a 28 day waiting period, it didn't really change who could own guns legally. From [Link: en.wikipedia.org]20 May 1999 - The Snowtown murders were uncovered when the remains of eight bodies were found in six acid-filled barrels in a disused bank vault in Snowtown, South Australia, and the remains of two more bodies were later discovered under a brick rainwater tank stand at a Salisbury North property, bringing the total number of victims to eleven. 13 March 2000 - Millewa State Forest Murders - Barbara and Stephen Brooks and Stacie Willoughby were found dead, all three having been shot execution style and left in the forest. 23 June 2000 - Childers Palace Fire - Robert Paul Long set fire to a backpacker's hostel in Childers, Queensland; 15 people were killed. 14 October 2002 - Dr. Margret Tobin, the South Australian head of Mental Health Services, was shot dead by Jean Eric Gassy as she walked out of a lift in her office building. 21 October 2002 - Monash University shooting - Huan Xiang opened fire in a tutorial room, killing two and injuring five. 18 February 2006 - Cardross Hit and Run - Thomas Graham Towle crashed his car at high speed into a group of 13 teenagers killing six and injuring seven near the town of Cardross, Victoria. 7 February 2009 - 2009 Victorian bushfires - Arsonists lit several fires contributing to the deaths of 173 people. 28 April 2011 - 2011 Hectorville siege - Donato Anthony Corbo shot dead Kobus and Annetjie Snyman and their son-in-law Luc Mombers and seriously wounded Mr Mombers' 14-year-old son Marcel and a police officer at Hectorville, South Australia before being arrested after an eight hour stand off. And finally: 28 April 2012 - A man opened fire in a busy shopping mall in Robina on the Gold Coast shooting Bandidos bikie Jacques Teamo. A woman who was an innocent bystander was also injured from a shotgun blast to the leg. Neither of the victims died, but the incident highlighted the recent increase in gun crime across major Australian cities including Sydney, Brisbane and Adelaide. You may not have as much gun crime as the US, but you also don't have as many people. However, mass murder happens everywhere, if not with guns, then as Australia has shown with fire or cars.

I've always thought it would be a nice idea to load a 747 up with these types of whackos, get about a hundred or so loaded up. Get it up to about 32,000 ft, open the door and start pushing them out one by one. It would be fun to watch anyway. Or put them in parachutes, and we could shoot at them like giant skeet. How about crash test dummies? My brother-in-law is a fighter pilot. He says that all of our current ejector seat technology comes from the Soviet Union. We had a lot of issues with the ones we designed because we used crash test dummies to test ours. We got their technology when the Soviet Union collapsed and used it because it was so much better- they used death-row inmates to test theirs. CJ

In any case, a terrible tragedy but I fear the next mass shooting is only a month or two away. The next plane crash, the next car crash, the next heroin over dose, the next illegal invasion of countries like Iraq and the next creation of illegal prisons where thousands are held without due process... We live in a crazy cruel world where we murder each other over resources and blame all of our problems on imaginary masters of the universe. The idea that gun control will put a stop to this is pretty ridiculous. The crusades went on for years without a single shot fired. Active serial killers allover the planet strangle their victims. Crazy people are going to do crazy things no matter what we do. Banning guns is as ridiculous as banning specific breeds of dogs.
