I'm looking for something like this for (2) 12 gauge wires. [Link: amazon.com]any ideas? Those go up to #1 and are way too big. I prefer not to use crimps are one end will be solid wire and the load may exceed 10 amps

[Link: mcmelectronics.com]You can break these off to make what size you need: 1 to 1, 2 to 2, up to the whole 12 to 12. Rated to accept up to 12 awg and electrically handle 20 amps. I have tightend down on the set screws with a LOT of force before, and have never had one strip or break. If you do a search for "barrier strip" on thier site, you can find several variations of it as well.

I can't even quite imagine what might happen, but have you had any problems? Maybe the problems were with off-brand terminal strips with crappy metal compounds or something like that.

Butt splices will handle 10A with no problem as long as the wire gauge is adequate and the splice doesn't add resistance. Are you're splicing the 12AWG wire end to end or combining two of them on one side and splicing to another wire?

I've been using Deutsch connectors recently. I discovered them under the hood of my Subaru, and now I use them for all outdoor installs. Their crimping system is very effective as it is a Radial type crimp, and holds much better that the crappy crimp connections that are ubiquitous in 12v and commercial. Check out the jiffy splice. I bought the $35 tool from amazon, but will probably pop for one of the pro tools before long. [Link: deutschconnector.com]

I use those as well, however, I got some (not sure if it MCM stuff or not) that did not have a metal tab under the screw. Problem with that is that many of the stranded wires have enough room 'around' the screw to 'escape' and not make good connection. I got some from Radio Shack and while more expensive, they did have the metal tab under the screw, making a more comprehensive connection. (I tried to Google some pics for reference, but can't find any with a closeup at the moment).

They look awesome. From 12 to 28 gauge. I'm going to order a box myself. Their site isn't iPhone friendly so not sure of cost yet.
Thanks to all who responded. I do have some of that terminal strip and never thought to use that. It would certainly work.
The other link with that landscape terminations would also fit the exact requirement.
You guys rock.

I would also use the euroblock connectors. You can sleeve them with heatshrink if you split them individually too.

I may be schizophrenic, but at least I have each other. |
