In my opinion, Ad Words is not usually very effective as a marketing tool for CIs.

what have you found that works?

Really? I get a couple of leads a month out of it. I also spend less than $25 a month on it.

I use adwords also. Maybe $50 to $100 a month. I'm paying a lot for Crestron clicks (anywhere from $5-$7), but those seem to work best. People looking to have TV's hung aren't searching Crestron and people searching Crestron are serious buyers.

Just this week I had 2 calls for Crestron takeover jobs. They both found me through adwords by searching Crestron. Neither job will let me retire, but both include reprogramming an Adagio system from scratch and adding several remotes, rooms, and mobile access. These two jobs will pay for my adwords for the next 2-3 years.

I get maybe a call or two every few days from adwords, but I'm only spending anywhere from $12-25 per week and the majority of my calls are for Crestron, Sonos, or RTI. Interestingly enough I get almost ZERO calls from people who click from searching TV hang, flat panel install, etc. I think these people see I don't list a price and move on to the $99 guys, which is what I want to be honest.

I got talked into doing signage on the t-off benches at a local golf course... it was NOT cheap, and never got a single lead, but got a call from my ex boss who golfs there (lives there too)... said "Hey liked your advertising"! That was the ONLY call I got!

Ad in the local "Real Estate for Sale" rags can be good.

Both of those crestron systems will need to be upgraded in 5-10 years when they have more money and want a bigger house. You may have just purchased your retirement plan for a few bucks.

I have...

A lot of upgrades, add ons, repairs, and some new retrofit work as well.

And through the ads I was also contacted by some real estate agents, and interior decorators, that would send me work.

I felt like it was always one of the better places to advertise.

Regardless of where you advertise, you should always ask how your company name came up so you can verify if an ad is paying off.

I started the process of signing up for Adwords last night. Their website kept giving me an error resulting in them running a $1 charge on my card multiple times. My bank monitoring system saw it as fraud and locked my account, making for an embarrassing moment when I just went to go pay for some new shirts and hats at my local shirt place. I'm afraid to try again.

At least it wasn't while you were paying for a prospective clients lunch. That actually happened to me once when the bank shut down my card without notice due to suspected fraudulent activity. Not even a call to warn me!

DO NOT SET UP ADWORDS WITHOUT BUYING A $100 coupon from eBay. They're not good on old accounts. $100 could pay for your adwords for 2-3 months and I paid like $5 for mine i think.

Bump. I just got a call today from a company called Platinum Publishing. They claim they are different from all the rest and don't scam people. I knew I remembered reading a thread on here about these Country Club ad scams. I told the rep I was on the road and to call me tomorrow. I searched for the thread tonight, and I will tell her to get lost tomorrow. I just wanted to say thanks for saving me some money. FYI, they publish the Golf Almanac.
