I'm considering doing it. I negotiated a 50% discount on a 1/4 page ad (costs $200), but I have 3 days to cancel. it seems to be a good target audience (country club members)

Here is an example

Hah they've called me a bunch of times to try to get me to advertise. I called the country club and they never heard of the publication. They were gonna sell me a full page for like $600. Not bad if many people get the publication. One good job could pay for it.

You're right.  It's a scam.   If I remember correctly, they're based in Florida.  (Where most scam operations come from)

i did it three years ago, made me a killer ad though. I never got anything out of it, when they called me back for the second year i got smart and did some research. Found out it was a scam and i got taken for. Told the guy to go F*[email protected] himself Stupid me, live and learn. 800 bucks Gone (full page behind the cover and another half right above an interior decorator)

They also sent me a copy of the book. Was actually quite nice.

Sounds about right, I tried it, book looks nice, ad looks nice, never received any business from it at all.

I worked with a company in the Beverly Hills area. There and for a few other richish miles west there was a Thursday throw-paper printed on slick paper named Beverly Hills 213. We got one small ad in there and during the first week it came out, we booked about three months and were not able to even respond to anyone else. And as a deal that we could not make them stop, the paper extended our ad for a couple of months, totally pissing off people who called only to find us too busy.

Oh, yeah-- that was 1999.
A good answer is easier with a clear question giving the make and model of everything.

This was on our local news about a year ago...it's a scam. Most Golf Courses do their own Directory. We did it with the company in the rip off report, and we never saw a publication. My boss is a member at one of the clubs, and he never saw any of the so called directories. He also never saw it at any of the other clubs he went to. He did see their in house directory, made by the golf course. We advertise in one of the local directories for one golf course. It costs $750/year, for one course. The reason they make it so much cheaper is they figure its not worth your time to go to court to fight over $200.

The problem I found is that with assed values going down, they went to neighborhoods like mine as well as the ones I hoped to target. Believe it or not, I don't live in a mansion from slinging AV.

Anyway, I made my money back, the last mailing that went out went tio 50,000 homes, I received one call, got the job, turned out to be a 20K project. I never did it again though.

In my opinion, Ad Words is not usually very effective as a marketing tool for CIs.
