I was told about this tape a few years back and felt like sharing it with others. #M make a clear double-sided tape that is the best for securing and re-securing IR transmitter on to IR controlled objects. Not only is it strong, it doesn't leave residue when removed. It is hand down necessary for any installer and service person work bag. Clear silicon also works well.

The 3M VHB tape is good stuff, but expensive. I've used it to secure active RFID tags in the past and on larger surfaces like that, they are VERY difficult to remove.
The tape would take less time than heating up a glue gun and less messy than dealing with silicon. Lately I've been using IR emitter covers on most equipment that still require emitters and never had one of these come off.

+1 on the IR covers. Snaps covers fit perfectly over their emitters. I only use snaps emitters and not others that even come with the products. Makes it simple, clean and everything matches.

I typically will place the emitters, then test, and once everything works I will plug in the glue gun while cleaning up. Currenlty it's only necessary to glue on the DVD players and cable boxes as the rest of the equipment is IP.

Also, glue gun kits are available at a couple of fabric store and crafts chains in the LA area for about $5.00, so expense is near zero.
That tape does sound like a good idea at first, but if it's hard to remove, then repair is a problem. The whole challenge here is to find something that won't come off when the maid gets paranoid about cleaning and cleans off everything, including cleaning the emitters off the A/V equipment, yet allows us to remove them with little or no residue. For me, hot glue does it.

Stick them on with the supplied adhesive to test, then use clear adhesive silicon.
No problems with them coming off. Easy to remove if needed.
I always managed to get hot glue on me. And I didn't like the experience...LOL

Don't read my answer. Someone else will go into great detail as to why I am wrong rather than answer the original question... |

For the guys that use hot glue or silicone after testing; do you remove the emitter and clean off the original sticky tape, or just hot glue (or silicone) over the emitter?

I just use a dab of "adhesive" silicon on each side of the emitter cover after it's been tested.
Use hot glue on a TWC box and, because it's stuck on so very well, the cable genius will likely ruin the emitter when yanking the box off the shelf, or out of the rack (yes, it happened). Same with the emitter shells. The cable guy ruins enough of them, you WILL want to do something different.

Every time that happens, we get a billable service call, it gets us back in front of the client, and it reinforces the relationship when we fix what someone else couldn't/wouldn't.

Mario,
It is a bad thing when this happens and I'm at the beach (lying at the edge of the surf with small waves tickling my tootsies, passed out from too much grape, and have no desire to get off my sorry azz)...
