Today the new Directv Tivo units will be available nationally. Has anyone come across these yet? How are you controlling them? Is there serial protocol or do customers that went from the HR24 pro to the new TIVO have to use IR for control? Using an RTI control system there is a Tivo driver, but I dont think it will work with Directv boxes.

Anyone know anything about this?

Thanks

They use the standard DirecTV codes. TiVo codes do not work. The hardware is a DirecTV HR-22 running special TiVo software. And by special, I mean circa 2001. It is not equivalent to current TiVo software in looks or functionality. Think MPEG-4 capable HR10 without OTA capability.

Why anyone would want one of these is beyond me.

The remote has buttons that are proprietary to Tivo (Thumbs up, Live TV, etc.). Are you saying that Directv has these codes?

Anyone have a working version of codes yet?

Does it come with a "Peanut" remote? I always liked the feel of the TiVo peanut remote, very comfortable to hold, buttons well placed, extremely ergonomic!

Can't guarantee it, but my guess is Red is Thumbs Down, Green is Thumbs Up and Exit is Live TV.

At it heart, it is still a HR22.

Got a customer who has been waiting for these for 5 years. Called me once a month to ask about it. Now that they are finally here she is reconsidering. She saw her daughters MRV setup and was so turned on she now wants to keep the DirecTV DVRs. Thing that kills me is that she is already set up with dual DirecTV DVR's centrally located, controlled and distributed throughout the house, and she STILL WANTS the MRV. Why Lord, why?

See the illustrations of the THR-22 remote. It has Th-Up, Th-Dn and Red, Blue, Yellow and Green (aka A, B, C and D).

The box supports standard DTV codes via IR (Menu is TiVo) along with Thumb-Up, Thumb-Down, LiveTV and Zoom. The box also supports the TiVo IP protocol and RF (at least using the supplied remote). The current code (18A) has a couple remote glitches. When using IR codes sets other than 1 Swivel Search doesn't work. In RF mode the box still responds to IR code set 1 stand-by and wake (power off and power on) commands.

Wow, that menu takes me back.
I still have the original TiVO 40hr, made by Sony. I haven't plugged it in over 6 years, but I'd bet it would still work, less the HD part.

Confirmed the standard "White" remote does not have compatible Thumbs UP/Down codes. You would have to learn them.

But again, unless someone just has to have the TiVo interface and capability from 1999, this box is a step backwards from the current HD DVR's.

I'm wondering if that wasn't intentional, by both parties :-)
