If they agreed WRT how everything should be done, why would we need two, or more, parties? OTOH, we NEED more than one party, to avoid sliding too far in either direction- ALL legislation must be debated. However, debate is far from what they appear to be doing. The problem is that our Congress and politics in general have become too argumentative and less cooperative. Neither side wants to appear weak by compromising, and then they decide that pissing out their territory will make them seem stronger and decisive in the eyes of the American public. That is the problem. They have split everyone up into to sides. This is not how America as a whole is. While I may lean Right on some issues, I may lean Left on others. Congress does not allow for this. Either toe the party line or lose power. This is not how it is supposed to work. This country needs a third party for the middle 40%.

On a whole, it IS how the country exists. The rare ones are those who can see both sides of an issue. From the first time I voted, I didn't like the fact that crossing sides wasn't possible on the machines in use. The WI Governor before our last DB rallied for the stadium tax that was needed for Miller Park (home of the MKE Brewers) and when someone captured him on video saying "They're down there- stick it to 'em!" while holding a sloshing beer, looking pretty well gooned, I was pissed and I had voted for him. He also racked up a lot of deficit but he was still not as bad as the last Gov we had. I agree that the idjits at the extremes need to step aside and let the ones in the middle get some work done, we still need two parties involved, so they can keep an eye on each other. Unfortunately, this shows an inherent lack of trust, but when both sides want to slip little pet projects into major bills that the general public never takes the time to read (nor, are they willing to), it's a necessary evil.

But you can't split the country into 2 groups and have everyone in each group feel the same way on every issue. That is what we have. So instead of our elected representatives voting on either 1)what they believe or 2) what is in the best interests of their districts/states they vote with their party. Instead, they vote how the party leaders tell them to vote. That is what is broken about the system. How you fix it I have no idea.

I used to frequent a woodworking forum until all of the name-calling and ugliness just before the last Presidential election. The Left just couldn't debate anything- all they did was lambast everyone and act like their farts don't stink and that was on a good day. I had never seen anything like it, especially from people who were so willing to tell us how intelligent they are and how stupid we are for being on the other side. I thought it was disgusting. A lot of people were banned for it and the sad thing is that they also carried it over to the non-political threads, where people were asking about making cleaner dovetails by hand or some other woodworking topic. After 8 years with Bush they sorta had a point.

Maybe they had a point, but the sad thing, noted in highfigh's quote ann which you did not dispute, is that the left cannot seem to be able, or maybe willing, to debate. Instead, they call names or accuse people of being bad. This completely draws the argument away from the argument.
Once you realize this by clearly seeing it, it's hard to forget, and it's hard to give much value to the positions on the left when they don't give their positions enough value to be able to discuss them rationally.

Its like listening to Christians, Jews or Muslims complain about the evil Christians, Jews or Muslims. Your comment about the left is ridiculous. Thats why i responded with my "lefty" sarcastic remark. The two of you have had an epiphany that the "left" blames everything on the "right" while you two on the right sit here blaming that on the "left". You guys crack me up.

After 8 years with Bush they sorta had a point. Regardless of whether they had a point or not- being all brave and abusive works online but I seriously doubt any of them would have had the balls to be that way face to face. Online, the worst thing that can happen is someone's feelings are hurt and someone is banned. The way they acted like the rest of us were morons and lepers was, as I posted before, disgusting. If someone wants to debate, fine. Debates can become heated, but that was far beyond 'heated'.

You guys crack me up. Personally, I'm not happy with either side, although I know people who are on the other side of the aisle from mine and I get along with most of them just fine. Some, I just won't discuss politics with. As I have posted before, I'd like to see the extremists pound sand and let the rest get the work done without screwing people.

39: I maintain that conservatives discuss the issues and the validity of the issues much more than liberals do, and liberals call names and emotionalize discussions to the point where the discussion ends.
Frinstance, have you ever heard of a conservative shouting down a liberal speaker? Have you heard of liberals shouting down conservative speakers? Conservatives want everyone to be heard because they know that sunlight is the worst thing for liberal thought -- mostly because liberal thought is more emotion than thought. The few conservatives I listen to on the radio always put on the air people who disagree, so the issues can be aired, more often than people who agree. The liberal talk radio I've listened to is mostly smarmy sarcasm.

I have found the exact opposite. I have found that conservatives suffer from selective memory loss and assume that our financial problems started in 2008. I have found that many who vote republican are ignoring the fact that the economy has begun to turn around. Frinstance, have you ever heard of a conservative shouting down a liberal speaker? Never heard of him? The liberal sarcasm is only bested by the right wing "Mexicans are taking your jobs and Muslims are ruining baby Jesus" wackiness. I guess we could say that some liberals are to blame and some conservatives are to blame. Nah... Your right. It's gotta be one or the other.

The reason that "discussing" politics (or religion) is a waste of time is because not many are able to step outside of what they want to believe. I hear conservatives complain about Obama being a socialist. These same conservatives are applying for earned income credits when they file taxes because... wait for it... they have a child. Seriously? You thin you deserve a tax break because you and your wife made a baby? And for some reason you don't understand that you have basically just signed up for and are eagerly awaiting your welfare check? You can call it an "earned income credit" but the reality is that its welfare. Your baby didn't work and you didn't do anything special at work or for society by having a child. Your having a baby just cost me money. Maybe i should vote to have all parents pass a drug test to make sure they are not using their hand out to get high.
Some people will get that i just poked fun (it was sarcasm but its absolutely true) at the "make welfare recipients pass a drug test" nonsense that has been in the news lately. Others will selectively ignore that and assume i am attacking "family".
I hear liberals whining about the Tea Party... and then LOL! supporting the occupy wall street movement. Really? Its the exact same thing. The only difference is that the Tea Party has those wonderful racists who drag around monkey dolls (thats how they view Obama and anyone who isn't white) and the occupy wall street movement has the weirdos who are wiggling their fingers in the air. So yeah... there are weirdo slackers who need to get a job.. occupying wall street and yes... there are Timothy McVeigh types at your Tea Party get together.
That doesn't change the fact that all of the other people supporting either movement are there because they are tired of corporate America and our politicians making deals that sell our nations soul to China and the Oil industry. This is the root of our problems. Unemployment didn't happen because Mexicans showed up to pick crops and wash dishes. Mexicans have been picking crops and washing dishes for 50 years. It happened because just about everything available for purchase anywhere is made in China. Mexicans didn't make that happen. Manufacturers and our law makers did. We can pretend that this is some complex situation but the reality is that we could reverse it overnight by raising import taxes enough to level the playing field.
Another fun one for the Conservative party is union busting. Seriously? Working class people are actually voting to put an end to Unions and collective bargaining? LOL OMFG! Just wait until you idiots get your way and find yourselves working for free. How quickly the working man forgets WHY they are not slaves (like actual slaves instead of just credit slaves like we are today) to corporate America.
At my high school we had like 50% drop out rate. We could have really used a program there to teach kids how to be electricians or carpenters or mechanics or something that would have allowed them to have a decent paying career after high school. College just wasn't a reality for most of the graduating class. Instead we sat there for 4 years twiddling our thumbs learning math that no one uses and practicing penmanship... you know...because its so important in a world with computers everywhere.
This is the real reason we dont have programs like that.
The democrats will want it because it will help poor people.
The republicans will be against it because it costs money today (and because democrats want it).
The democrats will eventually get it to pass (we are in Chicago). Republicans will have no problem signing up for and taking advantage of the program even though they fought it the entire way.
The republicans will cut funding.
The democrats will cut funding.
The republicans will try and privatize it while blaming any flaws on the democrats.
The program will cost twice as much and be half as valuable after privatization. You know... because privatization is a money grab scheme where they bid on something, raise the price after winning the bid and then hire people who are less competent to preform the required service.
The democrats will eventually fight against it and kill it because paranoia will kick in about the rich forcing the poor to work as mechanics and barbers.
There will be plenty of bribery and thievery from both parties who have access to the funds and we (the tax payers) will once again be strapped in for the ride.
Republicans will point the finger at Democrats.
Democrats will point the finger at Republicans.

Ernie, have you never heard Savage, or Coulter or Hannity speak? The left, which I belong to has their share of blowhards that talk past each other as well. Plus, does anyone on the right actually understand the definition of Socialist? Obama is anything but that, yet there's the crowd repeating this stupidity. Just like the left calling the right Nazi's. Everyone needs to grow up.
