I am trying to set up a customer to access their Lutron from outside the home. It's not working. I need some help.

The router is Asus RT-N56U

The customer has a static IP, lets call it 98.1.1.1 (for ease of typing)

How do I set this up to access from outside the home? Inside the home there are no problems. I assumed I just put the static IP in the Lutron program, alas no go. What port does Lutron use that I need to open up? I just am at that point where you are pulling out your hair and you can no longer think rationally.

Everytime I try to access it, it says "Unable to download system information". Which tells me I am accessing it, but just something isn't right. If I put in a made up IP address, it gives me an unable to connect error.

Here is a screenshot of the Port Forwarding admin page:

To access the house from outside you would need the IP address of the router given to it by the internet provider. If you're at the house, go onto one of the computers there and go to www.whatismyip.com and it will tell you the IP address of the router. This address might work for a while but the internet provider could change the address so you use a dynamic naming service so you can always have access. Try dyndns.com They offer a free service. The IP address you get from them is what is entered into your Lutron software. From what I could find quickly online you've forwarded the correct port.

I have the correct IP address and it is static. For the purpose of this conversation it is 98.1.1.1

All of the documentation I can find for Lutron talks about setting up VPN. But if his network has a static IP, I dont understand why I can't do it without a VPN setup. I've forwarded the port. added the correct IP address (98.1.1.1) into the mobile program, and I get "unable to download system information".

When entering the IP address does it have somewhere to put in the port number you've forwarded? For my RDP connection and Crestron I changed the default ports and had to put the right ones in for it to work.

are you sure the ISP isn't blocking port 23?

no im not. i'll try changing that. According to the picture above, I change the port range correct? Leave the local port as 23?

Ok. Some added weirdness.

I can TELNET into the static IP and port 23 just fine.

It asks for a username and password.

I type those in (just like are entered in the ipad app) and it accepts them and I am in the system.

Why can I telnet into it from outside the network and send commands, but not through the program?!? Crazy.

If your trying to connect from outside with the Lutron mobile app it won't work unless you set up a VPN. It's a function of the app blocking it which is why you can telnet in.

I see PPTP Passthrough, but don't know how that would help me.

Do they have an i-Phone? Why not just use the app?

Otherwise, go to portforward.com and look for the router, then the device you're using. It should have the instructions. The tabs at the top shows 'Port Trigger'- look there.

I posted about this router the other day... I don't think it can do VPN.

packedge and someother top end routers will support VPN. Need to have it or use a third party control like RTI xp6 and remote into that by just port forwarding it.

I was doing port forwarding on an Apple router for the first time about a year ago. After futzing around with it, I finally figured I had to enter in the 0 prefixes. Instead of typing 192.168.0.71, I had to put 192.168.000.071 and it worked right away. Now whenever I type in an IP address I just include any zeros. Just an FYI that may or may not relate.

try setting the static ip of the lutron to the DMZ.
this will allow all ports to get to the internal static IP
