BP,

A few weeks ago I finally broke my Latitude D610 that was 6+ years old.  It was a great laptop and never let me down.  Over the years just had to replace batteries and upgraded memory & hard drive.

I was worried about not having a serial port too, but ended up replacing with a Latitude E6520 and picked up 3 different USB > Serial adapters.  Don't have much experience with it yet, but so far no issues when I've needed a serial connection.

I've been running for 3 days with the SSD in my desktop computer and it's made a huge difference in performance.  Now the brand new laptop (without SSD) seems slow to boot and respond.

The SSD I put into the desktop computer is a 256GB 2.5" drive so at some point I'll probably buy a larger SSD for the desktop and move this one into the laptop.

Only buyers remorse so far with the new Latitude is that I got the 15" screen and 9 cell battery.  It's big and heavy compared to my old D610 and I'm wondering if I shouldn't have stuck with the 14" screen.

the hard drive is user replaceable on your macbook.
no need to have them do it at apple store.

Done.

what i have seen others do though,
is swap main hard drive with new SSD of 256gb or so,
and then pull out the super drive (dvd) and replace it with a 1tb internal sata drive.

Are you aware if I can put another SSD drive in place of the DVD drive? I want the 512 primary and then a 256 secondary. The guys at apple would not comment on this scenario of course. I've used the DVD drive twice in the past two years. If I ever need it again I can buy the external drive for 79 bucks.

I've spoken to many apple genius guys about this. They all did this with their MBP. Swap the SuperDrive for an SSD. Only thing is if it's taken in for repair they won't touch it until its all back to stock hardware. Then they fix it, you put your stuff back in.

Good to know. My laptop, as a whole, is out of warranty. Are you saying that they won't even do out-of-warranty repairs if the DVD drive isn't in place?

SB-
I debated for a LONG time between the 15 and the 14 and decided that I only needed a bigger screen when I was at the desk. ended up with the 6410 and am very happy....the only remorse I have is not going SSD.
