Everyone in my girlfriends family got macbook air's with SSD drives. Now I want one of those drives for my 15" macbook pro. Has anyone upgraded their standard drive to an SSD?

I have not done it yet, but I plan on Swapping out my optical drive to an SSD in the near future. I just bought a new OCZ Vertex 3 SSD for my desktop at home and have been running an older SSD as a boot drive for a while on that machine.

the Dollar per Gig just isnt low enough to use a SSD for a primary drive at this point.

Yes I've noticed they are 300-800 bucks for the SSD drive depending upon the size. In my initial research I'm seeing the Samsung is better than Toshiba? I guess the macbook air comes with one of those depending upon build date? Pricey for a drive in todays standards, but damn do those things load and boot up fast! Cheaper than buying a new laptop I suppose :-)

I did on my Dell laptop and will be on my new Lenovo as soon as I get around to it. I got an OCZ for the Dell which has been fine, however Intel has the rep for relability. The new Lenovo is my go to computer for everything and will be replacing my desktop and occasionaly used Dell Laptop. Because of this, i will be sticking with Intel for my new SSD.

I did it and love it.  My laptop boots up in 12 seconds compared to 60-90 seconds before.  I'll never go back.

...macbook air's with SSD drives.

One way to avoid the idea that

air's

looks right is to write the actual product with the proper capitalization. It should be

...MacBook Airs

with no apostrophe.
A good answer is easier with a clear question giving the make and model of everything.

I purposely did that...you know, so all of the fuddy duddy Windows guys would keep moving along. Haha! In any case I'm heading to the Apple store this weekend to investigate this upgrade. I'll report back with my findings. According to the Crucial website and their SSD configuration app I can put in a 256gig for $380 or a 512gig for $800. Will likely let the geniuses do this for me though for warranty purposes.

I do most of my work with the desktop computer and just got a Crucial 256GB solid state drive for the OS & apps.  I've got Windows and apps loaded but waiting for the the weekend to move data around and bring it on-line.

I purchased a 2.5" drive thinking that maybe in a year or so I'll move it to my laptop.

So far the results are really promising with quick boots and almost instant application loading.

I have a 128 on my Lenovo and there is like 10GB remaining. 99.9% of my data is stored on a 1tb drive that i installed in the optical bay. Had to lose my DVD drive.

I did this upgrade last year. Might have been a full year ago now. Night and day difference. The biggest issue is that i cant store much data on the 128 drive so it cant be the only drive in the machine. I have quite a bit of software installed. Full MS/Adobe suites. At least 10 Control system products. AutoDesk and D-Tools. A couple of gigs of utilities like filezilla/ipscanner. I am pretty much maxed out on the 128 with no data.

If i were doing this right now i would go 256 minimum for OS and apps. The 512 is tempting but its not enough for all of my data so i might as well use the additional drive with the smaller/less expensive SSD. The 256 gives you some wiggle room and a little bit of space for Data. Would probably work fine if you don't try and keep all of your music/movies/games on it and if you keep the bulk of your customer files backed up to external drive or available over the net/nas.

the hard drive is user replaceable on your macbook.
no need to have them do it at apple store.

what i have seen others do though,
is swap main hard drive with new SSD of 256gb or so,
and then pull out the super drive (dvd) and replace it with a 1tb internal sata drive.

best of both worlds. and expensive.
if you save original parts you will always maintain your warranty.
you would just have to reinstall the dvd drive before taking it in for warranty.

I have a 512gb SSD in my laptop (it was a custom format so it couldn't be easily upgraded later), and a 256gb on my desktop (plus 8 TBs of hard drives). I can safely say that going to SSD was one of the best upgrades I've ever made.

I'm needing to replace my wonderfully beat up and scarred war horse Lattitude. Due to this conversation I'm really considering SSD.

But I'm old school so I'm going to try and get a serial DB9 if possible.
