I have a customer who has an already wired area with 2 HDMI's fed to his panel and really hates the sound of the Samsung plasma PN64D550 speakers. He has a set of Paradigm shift speakers he is looking to try and use for the sound. The panel lacks an analog audio out. I had a toslink to RCA converter on the van so I threw it on to see how it acted and it works except it's a fixed level out. There is no option I can find in the television menu to change the fixed to variable, just the ability to turn the panel's speakers on or off. Does anyone know of a piece that can be controlled remotely that would act like a volume control for an RCA level signal? I looked at and offered the solution of putting a receiver at the equipment end and running speakers wires to some in ceilings or in walls or running RCA's from the equipment area to the shifts, but he asked if such a piece existed and I told him I would research the possibility before he made any decisions. Thanks in advance

One thing I have learned in this industry. It is easier to pull a wire than it is to push one. |

Caution on the Xantech. It is a remote attenuator for line level signals. Works great, but if you need to increase volume past what the fixed output level is, you may not be thrilled with the results.
That being said, I can assure you it works well for the many, many many installed in the field.
Available at my favorite supplier, by the way.

RB-
I have a similar situation where I tried to add a Zamp to the audio outs of a Samsung TV to a pair of small Triads. The audio out is not adjustable so I'm having to switch to a receiver.
If that TV has a headphone jack, that may work for you. My client's TV does not.

Fred, shame on you. You TOTALLY missed the upsell here! And it would have solved the possible problem you mentioned. AND I think he might need it.
The Xantech RP-41AV is a line level preamp. It's got selection of four inputs and includes an NTSC video channel, too, but it WILL amplify the line level signal if needed, as well as attenuate to zero.

I'm waiting for them to discover they need an RC68 to run the unit.

Fred, there's your answer to that. I make the sometimes mistake of ASSuming people have IR databases, so I did not mention that.

Well provided him with the options and he actually chose to go the receiver route. I already learned the RC68 lesson after selling a xantech video matrix. Luckily URC has the code set in the database and I just cross referenced the number to a MX450 and was able to get it up and running. Thanks for all the input and ideas though. I have found at least with samsung tvs that a thorough read of the owners manual is almost a must on anything other then basic HDMI operation. There you can learn fun facts like -although a 550 series plasma has a VGA port labeled PC on the back panel that it is not active and if you want to hook a PC to this TV use an HDMI

I'm fairly sure my plasmas at home are the 550 series, and the VGA input works just fine. (with the exception that they put the tv into standby if the pc is turned off, but I found the fix for that as detailed in a previous thread of mine) [Link: remotecentral.com]|
