Check the refurb section at the apple store. I remember seeing that they were selling the original iPad for $299. There are readers for all 3 big companies on it as well as the best kids apps by far.
That being said, all of the color options are HEAVY!!! The new new Nook black and white (I believe it is called the Simple Nook) is the smallest and lightest. There are no apps, but it is by far the easiest to hold and read. I have an iPad, and bought a nook color but returned it because it was so heavy reading was uncomfortable. I do all my reading on the new Simple Nook for just that reason.
