So we advertise quite a bit and get most our work from referrals... but in the last week I've had some questions that made me say...

Today was a call asking our rate to clean speakers? Just clean them off.

Last week I was asked which brands of chainsaws we carry?

Huh?

Got me thinking, do you get those 'huh' type questions or is it just me?

We get calls pretty regularly from people looking to have a CD player installed in their car.  After a little investigation, I found that if you type "car audio Ann Arbor" into Yahoo, we come up as the second result.  Wierd.

On a side not the #1 result is a hi-fi shop that does only 2ch and turntables.

yeah, Before we changed our name our original name was "Mainline Home Entertainment" we had our truck lettered like that with pictures of TV's and written in bold was "Home Theater Design, Sales & Installation. I was getting coffee at WaWa and a lady walked up to me and asked if we were available over the weekend for her daughters party, then proceeded to ask how much it would cost for two clowns on short notice as the last one had cancelled the booking.

I looked at her, said "Ma'm we install home theaters and audio video systems, we are not a party company" she looked puzzled then said ohh! i see the TV's Well since your in the entertainment business do you know of a company that rents clowns.

Face Palm, the next month we changed our name and redid the truck lol

some people see the word "marine" and think I can fix everything on a boat.  I often get requests for engine service.    sorry, I do marine electronics, i'm not a mechanic.

Nope, my name would have to be Sledgehammer if I were a mechanic.   Duct Tape is a name for car audio installer hacks.  :p

We once got a call to get a quote to install some speedbumps. We verified that the person on the phone knew what company they were talking to, and they did.

No idea.

Wow, I get this probably twice per week. Maybe I'm missing a great source of revenue here?

We got asked to fix a leaky shower when we were doing a very high end theater

Got a call if we rented clowns

Got asked by a boat manufacturer that we were doing some warranty work for to redesign the generator house battery system... Wtf

If we customized cars super chargers and paint

And about 100 other odd requests

We regularly get asked if we rent DJ type eqipment, especially projectors. I think it may be a profitable, straight forward opportunity and also would lead to upsells to permanent installations on occasion. Does anybody here do it?

I was asked to catch 2 guinea pigs that a client's daughters let loose in the backyard. I had to oblige that one. :)

My business phone number was previously a number for a flooring company...approx 6 years ago.
I get a call once or twice a month with flooring questions. The funny part, or sad part depending on how you see it, is the people calling leave a message AFTER they have listened to a voicemail detailing our audio video services!
