We don't even get out of bed for anything less than 6.5.

I'm Not an engineer, but I play one on TV. My handle is Tweety but I have nothing to do with the organization of similar name. I just had a really big head as a child so folks called me tweety bird. |

Strong in central NC too.... I didnt notice it. But a lot of the areas up here in the mountains felt it too. What they said on the news is that the ground on the east coast is much harder than on the west coast, so it causes the quake to be felt farther and for this 5.9 to feel more like a 6 to 6.5 on the west coast.

yeah, you could say I felt it....I live approx 35 miles from the epicenter and it was the first quake I have ever felt and it did not take long to get out of the office for sure...saw cell towers swaying like small trees in a strong windstorm....all I could think of was my kid who was @ daycare @VCU on the first floor....BELOW a 5 story parking deck, and man the description you get of a quake from a 4.5 YO is interesting for sure!

That is scary. I think I would find another daycare not below a parking garage.

[Link: grist.org]Pictures of the devastating damage the quake caused. I don't know why people from Cali are laughing at the East Coast.

I am the one that made the comment about the Cali people laughing at us but I didn't mean they actually were. Did everyone see the cars that had the bricks fall on them? The one car looked normal from the back but the front was smashed flat. edit: I just looked at that link and that was pretty funny.

The amazing thing was the size of the area it covered. I've been through 3 or 4 pretty good quakes in Seattle (we are rpojected to have a major quake). They are a very wierd sensation, as first you wonder what is that roar - then when things start moving and rolling, you ask yourself -"Uh-oh, is this going to be the BIG one?" The first big one I was in, I was on the track field in Jr. High, running around the track & the ground had a roller, like a wave... knocked half of us down! The sound was like a thousand railroad cars coming at us. It really freaked us out. Totally trashed my old brick school. We watched as the windows broke, the tall chimney swayed like a snake, before collapsing, and hundreds of screaming kids poured out of the building. We could see the ceilings and light fixtures falling down. We are slated to have major quake in Seattle, and I don't think I want to be around. Glad there was no major damage or injuries.

I was sitting with a customer programming a remote when the quake hit. My customer is older with bad knees and when it started hopping the wife was screaming down the hallway. I jumped up and got her to moved under a strong doorway.
Later, they kept thanking me for reacting so quickly.
On Thursday a microburst storm went through my area with gusts over 80 mph and blew down my neighbors 100' tree. Luckily, it fell on the driveway and no houses were hit.
We are now battening everything down in preparation of Hurricane Irene.
All this in less then a week in Virginia .
